Community Rail Network has appointed Bill Freeman as its new chief executive officer to lead the organisation through the next phase of growth for the grassroots movement and help ensure community rail remains central to the future direction of Britain\u2019s railways, says Community Rail Network today (Monday).<\/p>\n

Bill, who previously served as interim chief executive of Community Rail Network in 2025, will rejoin at a pivotal moment for the organisation, with rail reform, devolution and the development of Great British Railways creating significant opportunities for communities to have a stronger voice in shaping local transport and rail services.<\/p>\n

Chair of Community Rail Network Jeremy Whitaker said: \u201cWe are delighted to appoint Bill to lead Community Rail Network at such an important time for both the community rail movement and the wider rail industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cBill was a highly valued member of the team during his time as interim chief executive last year, and the Board is delighted that he will now become the organisation\u2019s permanent chief executive.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe look forward to working with Bill to ensure community rail continues to shape the future of the railways across England, Scotland and Wales.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bill Freeman said: \u201cI\u2019m delighted to be rejoining Community Rail Network to continue working alongside such a passionate and committed movement.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving already spent a significant amount of time working closely with members, partners and colleagues, I\u2019ve seen first-hand the incredible impact community rail has in connecting people and places and helping communities thrive.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs rail reform progresses, it is more important than ever that community rail is recognised, supported and embedded within the future structure of the railway. I\u2019m looking forward to working closely with members, key stakeholders and colleagues to champion that role and support the continued growth and success of the community rail movement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Community Rail Network is the national membership body for community rail partnerships and station volunteer groups across Britain. The community rail movement connects places with their railways, promotes sustainable travel and helps shape rail policy. There are 76 community rail partnerships and more than 1,300 station volunteer groups across Britain.<\/p>\n
