Stegra (formerly known as H2 Green Steel) chose Green Cargo to \u201cmanage freight flows between our upcoming plant in Boden and the various ports we will use\u201d. The steel production facility in Boden, in northeastern Sweden, should be ready in early 2027, with rail freight playing a key role.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>State-owned operator Green Cargo will thus move raw materials and finished products between Boden and a few ports on the Swedish east coast. Stegra has already signed deals with the ports of Lule\u00e5, Skellefte\u00e5 and Ume\u00e5. In addition to connections to ports, rail freight should also be vital for connecting the iron ore mines owned by LKAB (Europe\u2019s largest iron ore producer) to the future Stegra facility in Boden.<\/p>\n

LKAB and Stegra\u2019s relationship<\/h2>\n

Initially, LKAB seemed reluctant to supply Stegra with its ore because the Iron Ore Line (Malmbanan), which runs through various mines and reaches Boden, has been experiencing overcapacity for quite some time. However, delays in opening the Boden plant and the announcement of upgrades along the Iron Ore Line changed LKAB\u2019s mind and avoided Stegra having to import ore from Canada and Brazil.<\/p>\n

The Boden Industrial Park<\/h2>\n

The Stegra future facility will be the main piece of the Boden Industrial Park, a 550-hectare area planned to host low-emission heavy industries which will be connected to the Malmbanan<\/a>. Stegra\u2019s steel production site will take up more than half of the area with 270 hectares. In addition, it will feature the largest battery pack in the Nordic region and even zones where food can be grown using the surplus heat caused by the plant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
