Due to the scale of the work involved, railway contractor Railscape is supporting the project with specialist tools and practical assistance.

Working in partnership with Norfolk Wildlife Trust, volunteers are also creating a dedicated wildlife area which will be enjoyed by the wider community and support educational activities with nearby Brundall Primary School.

The initiative aims to maximise opportunities for local wildlife by introducing plants and habitats that encourage insects, bugs, bees, butterflies and birds to thrive alongside the railway.

The project is also receiving support from the local Men’s Shed group, which will provide bird boxes, bat boxes, bird tables and bug hotels for installation around the station.

The partnership approach evident in the project is consistent with the wider move towards GBR Anglia, which is bringing together c2c, Greater Anglia and Network Rail Anglia as part of the region’s journey towards Great British Railways. Through closer working, the three organisations are focused on creating a simpler, more joined-up railway that supports passengers, communities and the places served by rail.

Station volunteer, Tom Adams, said:

“We are incredibly grateful to Brundall Parish Council for supporting this project. Our aim is to create a vibrant and welcoming station environment that benefits both people and wildlife.

“By working with Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Brundall Primary School and the Men’s Shed, we hope to create something the whole community can enjoy while also helping local biodiversity flourish. It’s fantastic to see so many organisations coming together to support the station.”

Kevin Wilkins, Brundall Parish Council Chairman, said:

“We were delighted to support this initiative with a community grant. The project will not only enhance the appearance of the station but also create valuable habitats for wildlife and opportunities for local children and residents to engage with nature.

“It is wonderful to see volunteers dedicating their time and energy to improving such an important gateway to the village.”

Alan Neville, Customer and Community Engagement Manager at Greater Anglia, said:

“Our station adopters do an incredible job creating welcoming and environmentally friendly station gardens across the network, and the work taking place at Brundall is a brilliant example of that dedication.

“Railway land can provide important habitats for wildlife, and projects like this help support biodiversity while also improving the experience for passengers and local communities. We are very grateful to all the volunteers and partners involved.”

The work forms part of a wider environmental success story across the Greater Anglia rail network, where more than 330 station adoption volunteers have transformed over 10,000 square metres of railway land into thriving wildlife gardens over the past year.

Railways are increasingly recognised by ecologists as important “green corridors”, providing safe habitats and movement routes for flora and fauna in both urban and rural areas.

A recent survey of Greater Anglia station adopters recorded more than 200 species visiting stations across the network, including butterflies, bees, bats, slow worms, foxes, deer, toads, lizards and a wide variety of birdlife.

Greater Anglia has also partnered with regional Wildlife Trusts to recognise volunteer achievements through the Greater Anglia Wildlife Friendly Stations Accreditation Scheme.

Brundall station was accredited in 2023.

Brundall station is on the Norwich – Lowestoft / Great Yarmouth Wherry Lines railway and also receives support from the Wherry Lines Community Rail Partnership, who help to promote and improve the line in partnership with Greater Anglia.

Volunteers at Brundall rail station in Norfolk have been awarded a grant to help create a new station garden and wildlife area.
