{"id":43875,"date":"2024-05-14T14:37:30","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:37:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43875"},"modified":"2024-05-14T14:37:30","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:37:30","slug":"investigation-launched-after-locomotive-derails-during-swanage-railway-gala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43875","title":{"rendered":"Investigation launched after locomotive derails during Swanage Railway gala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>An investigation has been launched following the partial derailing of a restored diesel locomotive from a heritage railway line during a festival in Dorset.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Swanage Railway suspended its evening diesel gala and beer festival train services on Saturday after a diesel locomotive partially derailed at Corfe Castle station.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-British Rail Class 50 locomotive Indomitable partially derailed at around 6.30pm as a passenger train bound for Harman\u2019s Cross and Swanage was running into Corfe Castle station from Norden.<\/p>\n<p>The locomotive was on the back of the six-carriage passenger train.<\/p>\n<p>No passengers were injured and no damage was sustained to the carriages of the train in the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The incident occurred on the second day of Swangage Railway\u2019s 17th annual three-day diesel gala and beer festival.<\/p>\n<p>Nine heritage diesel locomotives from the 1960s and 1970s \u2013 seven of them visiting the Swanage Railway and two resident \u2013 gathered on the heritage line to haul passenger trains during the gala and festival.<\/p>\n<p>The Class 50 Indomitable locomotive was built in 1968 and withdrawn from British Rail service in 1990. A group of volunteers spent 15 years restoring it.<\/p>\n<p>The Swanage Railway has informed the Government\u2019s independent Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) which is investigating the cause of the partial derailment.<\/p>\n<p>The heritage line\u2019s regulator and inspectorate \u2013 the Government\u2019s Office of Rail and Road (ORR) \u2013 is aware of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Specialist contractors were brought in to re-rail the diesel locomotive, with the operation being completed in the early hours of Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The locomotive, which carries British Rail Network South East livery from the 1980s, has been taken out of service and will be examined for any damage.<\/p>\n<p>Swanage Railway Company chairman Gavin Johns said: \u201cThe Government\u2019s Rail Accident Investigation Branch has been advised of the incident and we liaised with the RAIB regarding the recovery of the diesel locomotive and the RAIB\u2019s investigation into what caused the partial derailment of the diesel locomotive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the RAIB is investigating the incident \u2013 and after discussions with the RAIB \u2013 our planned train services for Sunday have been altered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be 11 trains operating but they will only be running on the five and a half miles of line between Swanage, Corfe Castle and Norden \u2013 not beyond Norden on the four miles of line to the River Frome, within sight of Wareham, as our train services were during the first two days of our annual diesel gala and beer festival.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An investigation has been launched following the partial derailing of a restored diesel locomotive from a heritage railway line during a festival in Dorset.
