{"id":43597,"date":"2024-05-14T16:14:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T06:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43597"},"modified":"2024-05-14T15:22:09","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T05:22:09","slug":"underwater-train-connecting-europe-and-africa-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43597","title":{"rendered":"Underwater train connecting Europe and Africa &#8216;by 2030&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Moroccan National Company for Strait Studies (SNED) announced last week it is are starting feasibility research on a revived 40-year-old&nbsp;train&nbsp;project that can connect&nbsp;Europe&nbsp;and&nbsp;Africa&nbsp;by 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project highlights a 28km underwater tunnel between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escape.com.au\/destinations\/europe\/spain\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escape.com.au\/destinations\/africa\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Morocco<\/a>&nbsp;that would reach down to depths of 475m and is targeted to be finished by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, the project is still in its planning stage, where the developers are researching and confirming if it is indeed possible, both from a financial and logistical perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ideally, they want to finish and open the&nbsp;tunnel&nbsp;in six years to give way to the&nbsp;2030 Fifa World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the three countries involved in the project:&nbsp;Spain,&nbsp;Portugal, and&nbsp;Morocco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the tunnel gets the green light, it would be a&nbsp;high-speed train service&nbsp;that connects Spain\u2019s existing rail lines to Morocco\u2019s Al Boraq route.
