{"id":43547,"date":"2024-05-14T14:37:40","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43547"},"modified":"2024-05-14T14:37:48","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:37:48","slug":"a-huge-change-is-coming-to-trains-across-new-south-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43547","title":{"rendered":"A huge change is coming to trains across New South Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/sydney\/index.html\">Sydney<\/a>&#8216;s public transport system is getting a modern update &#8211; but not everyone&#8217;s happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transport&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/new-south-wales\/index.html\">NSW<\/a>&nbsp;is changing up the language of its &#8216;confusing&#8217; and &#8216;antiquated&#8217; train announcements in a move some have slammed as &#8216;ridiculous&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phrases including &#8216;alight here&#8217; and &#8216;terminate&#8217; frequently heard on Sydney trains via the pre-recorded notices will be gradually swapped out for more &#8216;casual&#8217; and &#8216;colloquial&#8217; words.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passengers will simply be told to &#8216;get off&#8217; the trains rather than &#8216;alight&#8217; and advised that a service &#8216;ends here&#8217; instead of &#8216;terminates&#8217; to avoid any confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a service is delayed, passengers will be warned their journey will take &#8216;extra&#8217; not &#8216;additional&#8217; time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"552\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-14-at-2.35.16\u202fPM-1024x552.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-14-at-2.35.16\u202fPM-1024x552.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-14-at-2.35.16\u202fPM-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-14-at-2.35.16\u202fPM-768x414.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-14-at-2.35.16\u202fPM-1536x828.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Screenshot-2024-05-14-at-2.35.16\u202fPM.png 1688w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Transport NSW is changing up the language of its &#8216;confusing&#8217; and antiquated&#8217; train announcements in a move some have slammed as &#8216;ridiculous&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was found the language used in current announcements was often misunderstood after 1,200 commuters were interviewed about their experiences on Sydney trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many have welcomed the change saying the new wording will be easier for tourists to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;I often wonder how tourists would understand that terminology,&#8217; one Sydneysider said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Lived in Australia for 11 years, never understood what &#8220;alight&#8221; in train announcements was,&#8217; another responded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Haha, good. &#8220;Prepare to alight&#8221; always made me feel like I was about to catch on fire,&#8217; another added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;It will allow some people with limited language abilities (including those with English as their second language) to more easily understand announcements. Who the hell uses &#8220;alight&#8221; anymore?&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, others feared the terminology swap was &#8216;dumbing down&#8217; their journeys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;It&#8217;s not &#8220;antiquated&#8221;, they are the appropriate and correct words in our big beautiful language but go ahead until we&#8217;re all just grunting at one another,&#8217; one woman said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;I get it on an inclusive and accessible level, but the language doesn&#8217;t change access,&#8217; a second noted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Those same words are widely used around the world so I know makes it easier for me when travelling when the same or similar words are used.
