{"id":43537,"date":"2024-05-14T14:33:24","date_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43537"},"modified":"2024-05-14T14:33:33","modified_gmt":"2024-05-14T04:33:33","slug":"rio-tinto-autonomous-train-derailment-left-five-workers-shaken-as-they-escaped-potential-harm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=43537","title":{"rendered":"Rio Tinto autonomous train derailment left five workers shaken as they escaped potential harm"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Mining and Energy Union says rail workers were left &#8220;shaken&#8221; and narrowly escaped harm when the train they were repairing was struck by another in Western Australia&#8217;s Pilbara region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mining giant Rio Tinto said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-13\/wa-pilbara-rio-tinto-train-derailment\/103839526\">an autonomous train hit a set of stationary wagons<\/a>about 80 kilometres outside Karratha just&nbsp;after midnight on Monday, damaging 22 wagons and three locomotives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Rio Tinto spokesperson said no people were in the vicinity and no-one was injured, but union secretary Greg Busson said five staff were further down the line working on the stationary equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iron ore trains can be several kilometres long and Mr Busson confirmed the group were unharmed, but said they were shaken by the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said if workers were closer to the site of the crash the consequences could have been far more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;[They were working] in the dark in an isolated area, and even though they were a bit away from where the incident happened they were still at risk and it&#8217;s obviously shaken them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They could have been at the other end of the train. It could have been far worse.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of the National Rail Safety Regulator (ONRSR) has launched an investigation and yesterday said it received a report about a collision between a loaded ore train and a recovery train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The recovery train is reported to have collided with the ore train it was sent to recover after it was disabled by a mechanical failure,&#8221; a spokesman said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/f28d4ff4756b5f14cfba217b428eff4d?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=2216&amp;cropW=3324&amp;xPos=306&amp;yPos=0&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" alt=\"Damaged wagons and locomotives\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A train crash and derailment in the Pilbara caused significant damage.<em>(ABC News: Charlie McLean)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The spokesman said in its early stages the investigation would focus on the operation of and adherence to signalling systems in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Busson said the workers were undertaking a &#8220;train rescue&#8221; on the equipment that had failed and only escaped harm after a mayday signal was issued minutes before the crash occurred.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-04-25\/computer-controlled-trucks-taking-over-in-pilbara-mining-wa\/5412642\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-04-25\/computer-controlled-trucks-taking-over-in-pilbara-mining-wa\/5412642\">Robots taking over in Pilbara<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-04-25\/computer-controlled-trucks-taking-over-in-pilbara-mining-wa\/5412642\">Driverless trucks, trains, and drills are gradually replacing manual and often dangerous mining jobs in WA&#8217;s north.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2014-04-25\/computer-controlled-trucks-taking-over-in-pilbara-mining-wa\/5412642\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/d41ade0af6266753b14693c78b630502?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=570&amp;cropW=1013&amp;xPos=8&amp;yPos=0&amp;width=862&amp;height=485\" alt=\"Driverless trucks are becoming more popular in Australia's mining heartland of the Pilbara.\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He accepted the mayday signal showed safety fail-safes had worked, but said it was unsafe to rely on emergency measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;On this occasion it did work.
