That port is now served by Ellerman’s BALTEX service, launched earlier this year. According to Ellerman, the switch of rotations reflects growing shipper demand for reliable and port‑centric access to key UK distribution regions.

Closer to logistics hubs

The revised iPEX 2 service will provide two weekly direct sailings from Poland into the UK. The switch from Gdynia to Szczecin takes about 125 miles off each leg of the voyage. Ellerman says that it will deliver some of the fastest shortsea transit times on the market. The first vessel was scheduled to depart Szczecin on 9 May 9 and arrive in Hull on 14 May.

The container terminal at Hull (ABP image)

“The iPEX 2 service also offers rapid transhipment connections into Portugal, supporting flexible cargo flows across Europe and enabling tailored multimodal solutions,” said a statement from the operator. “The Port of Hull offers closer proximity to major logistics hubs across the North of England and the Midlands, including Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield, Doncaster, Nottingham and Birmingham. This improved inland reach helps shorten road legs, reduces domestic transport costs and supports more efficient end‑to‑end supply chain strategies for UK importers.”

Consolidating trades

For Polish exporters, shorter inland haulage within the UK reduces overall transit times and logistics costs, while enabling earlier availability of goods for regional distribution. “Shifting the UK call to Hull is a clear win for both UK importers and Polish exporters,” said Peter Andrews, Commercial Director of Ellerman City Liners, when the move was announced earlier this year. “It brings cargo closer to core distribution corridors, cutting inland legs and improving planning predictability.”

The Poland–UK Express complements Ellerman’s existing weekly call by the Norwegian operator Viasea into the neighbouring Port of Immingham. That trade came under the Ellerman flag following the acquisition of the Norwegian shortsea operator in November 2025. “The service utilises non-congested ports and terminals to help maintain schedule integrity and dependable weekly capacity,” says the company statement, although no inference is made as to the suitability of Associated British Ports Hull over the rival PD Ports, which manage operations at Teesport. In addition to the multiple port rotation of the BALTEX service, Ellerman still sails direct between Gdynia and the UK.
