Designed to haul prestigious express services between London and Glasgow on the West Coast Main Line, the locomotive became synonymous with the golden age of British rail travel.

Now on display at the National Railway Museum in York, the locomotive’s legacy is being honoured for the first time on an official UK coin. Designed by artist Gary Breeze, the reverse features a striking side-on depiction of Duchess of Hamilton in motion, capturing its distinctive streamlined form and reflecting the power, glamour and elegance that made it an enduring icon of Britain’s railways.

Credit: Royal Mint

The coin has been released in a range of editions to appeal to collectors and enthusiasts, including gold Proof, silver Proof Colour, Brilliant Uncirculated Colour and Brilliant Uncirculated versions. Each edition is accompanied by illustrated packaging that brings the locomotive’s story to life, exploring both its engineering significance and its cultural impact as a symbol of a transformative era in British transport.

Duchess of Hamilton has a rich and unusual history that adds further depth to the release. In 1939, it was selected to represent Britain at the New York World’s Fair, where it was temporarily renamed ‘Coronation’ and adapted for US regulations with the addition of a bell, headlight, and cowcatcher.

After returning to Britain in 1942, its streamlined casing was removed to simplify maintenance and its distinctive red and gold livery replaced with a plain wartime black. Following nationalisation in 1948, the locomotive remained in service until 1964, before being saved from scrapping by entrepreneur Billy Butlin and placed on display at his holiday park in Minehead. It later became part of the National Railway Museum’s collection in 1976 and has since been restored to its celebrated streamlined form.

Phillippa Green, licensing and partnerships manager at The Royal Mint said: “Duchess of Hamilton is one of Britain’s most extraordinary locomotives and is a true icon of speed, elegance and engineering ambition. It is a privilege to work with the National Railway Museum to bring this remarkable machine to an official UK £2 coin for the very first time.

“Gary Breeze’s design captures the locomotive’s streamlined beauty with real artistry, and we hope the release will resonate not only with coin collectors, but with all those who share a passion for Britain’s rich railway heritage.”

Amy Harbour, Head of licensing and commercial partnerships, said: “Duchess of Hamilton is one of those rare icons that captures both the innovation and the romance of Britain’s railway heritage. Working with The Royal Mint has been a fantastic partnership, they have a real strength in bringing British heritage to life through beautifully crafted products and compelling storytelling.”

“Together, we’ve created something that feels authentic to the locomotive’s legacy while offering collectors and enthusiasts a meaningful way to connect with its story.”

For more information visit www.royalmint.com.

The National Railway Museum has partnered with The Royal Mint to celebrate the power and elegance of the Duchess of Hamilton locomotive by unveiling a new commemorative £2 coin.
