volcano on the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/volcanoes-of-kamchatka-84427\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamchatka Peninsula<\/a>, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. On a near-daily basis, satellites detect new signs of activity within its horseshoe-shaped caldera, including <a href=\"https:\/\/firms.modaps.eosdis.nasa.gov\/descriptions\/FIRMS_MODIS_Firehotspots.html\" rel=\"noopener\">thermal anomalies<\/a>, hot avalanches and debris flows, and ash deposits that darken the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Landsat 9<\/a> satellite captured this image of the towering volcano<strong>\u2014<\/strong>one of the largest and tallest on the peninsula\u2014on April 23, 2026, a day when fresh activity left its mark on the snowy, late-spring landscape. A multi-lobed<strong> <\/strong>plug of viscous lava called a <a href=\"https:\/\/volcano.oregonstate.edu\/lava-domes\" rel=\"noopener\">lava dome<\/a>\u2014appearing as a dark patch in the caldera<strong>\u2014<\/strong>has been actively growing in recent months, according to reports from the <a href=\"http:\/\/kvert.febras.net\/van\/index?type=3\" rel=\"noopener\">Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team<\/a> (KVERT). Debris slides through structures that Alina Shevchenko, a volcanologist with the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, called \u201cavalanche chutes\u201d and \u201clahar channels\u201d radiating outward from the caldera. Collapses can trigger events geologists call <strong>\u201c<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geological-digressions.com\/block-and-ash-flows\/\" rel=\"noopener\">block-and-ash flows,\u201d<\/a> which typically contain coarse, blocky chunks of cooled volcanic rock along with powdery volcanic ash and soil.<\/p>\n<p>Such flows often produce thick, insulating deposits that retain heat for long periods, sometimes even months or years, melting snow in the winter months. As seen in the Landsat images above, this activity leaves dark channels and exposed patches that contrast with the surrounding snow cover.<\/p>\n<p>Satellites have regularly detected thermal anomalies within the caldera and near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volcanodiscovery.com\/shiveluch\/news\/297106\/Shiveluch-volcano-Kamchatka-actively-growing-new-lava-dome.html\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.volcanodiscovery.com\/shiveluch\/news\/297106\/Shiveluch-volcano-Kamchatka-actively-growing-new-lava-dome.html\" rel=\"noopener\">growing lava dome<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/4wcTt8t\" rel=\"noopener\">recent months<\/a>, as well as warm land surface temperatures along the <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/landsatexplorer\/#mapCenter=161.30587%2C56.63125%2C11.160&#038;%23038;mode=swipe&#038;%23038;mainScene=2026-04-23%7CNatural+Color+for+Visualization%7C10280831&#038;%23038;hideMapLabels=true&#038;%23038;hideTerrain=true&#038;%23038;secondaryScene=2026-04-23%7CSurface+Temperature+Colorized+%28Fahrenheit%29+for+Visualization%7C10280831\" rel=\"noopener\">network of channels<\/a>. On the day the image was acquired, KVERT reported that the \u201cexplosive-extrusive eruption\u201d of the volcano continued, accompanied by \u201cpowerful gas-steam activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An unusually large eruption and flank collapse in <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1134\/S000143382570149X\" rel=\"noopener\">April 2023<\/a> sent massive pyroclastic flows barreling tens of kilometers down the mountain, destroying vast swaths of forest and leaving large deposits and flow channels near the foot of the mountain that are still visible today. \u201cIt\u2019s quite possible that those deposits still retain some heat from that event,\u201d said Janine Krippner, a geologist based in New Zealand. Krippner noted that when she did field research on Shivelyuch block-and-ash flows in 2015, she could still feel the heat within deposits that were five years old. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShivelyuch is an incredible volcano that has collapsed over and over again, on several scales, ranging from enormous flank collapses to more modest dome-collapse events,\u201d Krippner said. \u201cIt goes through cycles of collapse but then builds itself up again and again through constant volcanic activity,\u201d she added. \u201cIt should really be on a motivational poster.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p><em>NASA Earth Observatory image by Lauren Dauphin, using Landsat data from the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/earthexplorer.usgs.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>U.S. Geological Survey<\/em><\/a><em>.
