Passengers at Tilehurst station are enjoying step-free access to all platforms for the first time after Network Rail installed three new lifts.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Access to the Berkshire station has been transformed for passengers with reduced mobility, prams and heavy luggage.<\/p>\n

The lifts have been added to the footbridge that was built during the Great Western Electrification programme in 2013. A new walkway has also been created between the car park and platform one to improve accessibility.<\/p>\n

Jon Higham, Network Rail sponsor, said<\/strong>: \u201cWe\u2019re pleased that passengers at Tilehurst are now benefitting from step-free access to all platforms following the installation of the new lifts.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstalling lifts at stations that were built in the Victorian era is a challenge and brings unique complexities. But we\u2019re committed to improving accessibility and ensuring the railway is welcoming and accessible for all.<\/p>\n

\u201cProviding step-free access allows more people to travel by train and with confidence, which means fewer car journeys, less congestion and lower carbon emissions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to thank passengers and the local community for their patience and understanding while we worked to install the new lifts.\u201d<\/p>\n

GWR Station Manager Tom Butler said: <\/strong>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted this work has been completed \u2013 providing a more accessible, safer station environment for all who use it.<\/p>\n

\u201cTilehurst is a very important station for both residents and visitors and we are delighted to have been able to work with Network Rail to deliver these improvements. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe know how important it is that all who wish to are able to access to the services we offer.”<\/p>\n

MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, Olivia Bailey said: <\/strong>“Hundreds of my constituents use Tilehurst Station daily to commute to work, for days out, or to visit friends and family, so I am delighted that there is now full step-free access. I would like to thank local people who, over a number of years, have campaigned for the lifts to be installed.”<\/p>\n
