DB Cargo UK recently secured a new seven-year agreement with Groupe CAT’s UK arm, CAT UK, to transport finished vehicles for Jaguar Land Rover. That deal will see cars moved from Halewood in Merseyside to the Port of Southampton, reinforcing rail’s role in the UK’s automotive logistics chain.

There is a long history of cars by rail in the UK and elsewhere. DB Cargo UK currently runs around three services per week, depending on demand, linking manufacturing output directly with export gateways. This new agreement comes as Jaguar Land Rover invests heavily in Halewood, near Liverpool John Lennon Airport, to support the production of next-generation electric vehicles. The contract is just the latest in a long-standing relationship between British rail freight and automotive production delivery.

Automotive rail network

The new contract builds on an established pattern of automotive rail flows in the UK, many of which converge on the Port of Southampton. The south coast port is by far the biggest UK port for automotive delivery and export. One of the most enduring examples is the movement of BMW Mini vehicles from Oxford. Trains have operated for more than 25 years. These flows have provided a consistent backbone for rail-based car distribution, linking inland production directly with global shipping routes.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="fluid alignnone" style="width: 100%; height: auto; display: block;" src="https://www.railfreight.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Fleet-1.jpg" alt="An automotive rail service at Barking in east London. Image: DB Cargo UK © Ben Saxton

DB Cargo UK has had a long-standing part in this network, handling a significant share of finished vehicle movements for British manufacturers. The Halewood–Southampton corridor adds further depth to these operations. It’s notable that the flow is ramping up at the same time as electric vehicle production scales up. Rail’s ability to move large volumes in single consignments continues to support port efficiency, especially where vessel schedules require steady and predictable delivery patterns – something that has been jeopardised of late by current affairs (see “Geopolitics home to roost“).

Building on Toyota and cross-Channel flows

The latest agreement also follows DB Cargo UK’s earlier expansion into international automotive logistics. In 2022, the company launched services with Groupe CAT to move finished Toyota vehicles between the UK and northern France. Operating from a purpose-built facility at Toton in the Midlands, these trains connect British production with European distribution networks via the Channel Tunnel.

The automotive facility at Toton in the English Midlands. Image: DB Cargo UK

“Following a series of successful trial runs, fully loaded trains carrying approximately 260 vehicles are now operating twice a week between the two locations,” the company said at the time. “The transfer used to take five days by road. [It] now takes just 24 hours by train and reduces carbon emissions by 2,300 tonnes every year.”

Continuity and capacity

DB Cargo UK emphasises the continuity of its relationship with CAT UK, formerly STVA, which spans more than two decades. “It’s a real honour to play a continuing role in the transportation of such an iconic British brand,” said Roger Neary, Chief Commercial Officer. “We have worked with CAT UK, formerly STVA, for more than two decades, helping them to move high-value automobiles across the UK and Europe for both import and export.”

Other ports with a significant automotive element use rail to some extent, in their own ways. Two prominent examples, the Port of Bristol complex in the west of England, and Teesport in the north, use Ro-Ro facilities for movements between compounds and ships. They both, however, rely on road transport for distribution, despite having extensive railheads. There is scope at both ports for that to change.

DB Cargo seems to be leading the way for rail-automotive logistics. “This new contract reinforces DB Cargo UK’s reputation for providing safe and reliable rail freight services,” added Roger Neary. “[Rail freight] remains the most environmentally sustainable method of moving large volumes of heavy goods. Rail freight offers a fast and efficient alternative to moving goods by road.” That would appear to remain true, even when the cargo is eventually destined for the highway.

Automotive movements by rail stepped up a gear this month.
