But with ULI, the agency shares its goals and universities consider how they can best help realize them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are no better ways in my mind to help develop that talent within the students than to engage them in identifying big problems and then give them the resources they need to use their creativity to solve them,\u201d&nbsp;Cavolowsky&nbsp;said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>ULI&nbsp;history<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>NASA\u2019s&nbsp;relationship with academia and&nbsp;reliance on its&nbsp;research&nbsp;proficiency&nbsp;is&nbsp;written into NASA\u2019s DNA&nbsp;going back to the days of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/history\/the-national-advisory-committee-for-aeronautics-naca\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics<\/a>, from which&nbsp;NASA&nbsp;was formed in 1958.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor more than a century we have leaned on the brilliance and the capabilities&nbsp;of universities to help us think,\u201d&nbsp;Cavolowsky&nbsp;said. \u201cWith&nbsp;ULI&nbsp;we can&nbsp;ensure they&nbsp;continue to bring their fresh ideas and&nbsp;young energy to the work we do at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/armd\/tacp\/ui\/uli\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA Aeronautics<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ULI&nbsp;evolved from&nbsp;an earlier&nbsp;project called Leading Edge Aeronautics Research for NASA&nbsp;(LEARN).&nbsp;NASA selected&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeronautics\/nasa-funds-five-teams-to-study-inventive-ideas-for-aviation\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five&nbsp;LEARN&nbsp;teams&nbsp;in 2015<\/a>&nbsp;to pursue&nbsp;truly&nbsp;outside of the box&nbsp;ideas&nbsp;that&nbsp;showed promise but needed&nbsp;additional&nbsp;study.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of those&nbsp;teams, for example,&nbsp;sought to take a cue from&nbsp;migrating&nbsp;flocks of&nbsp;birds by asking&nbsp;if airliners&nbsp;could save fuel by&nbsp;cruising&nbsp;in&nbsp;a giant \u2018V\u2019&nbsp;formation.&nbsp;The numbers were intriguing and simple flight tests proved&nbsp;the&nbsp;concept, although the idea never made it to practice.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Slightly retooled&nbsp;but keeping the innovative spirit of LEARN,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeronautics\/nasa-debuts-initiative-where-universities-take-the-lead\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ULI&nbsp;was&nbsp;officially&nbsp;announced<\/a>&nbsp;in 2016&nbsp;and a year later&nbsp;NASA selected&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/university-research-teams-to-study-potential-aeronautical-innovations\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five teams of university professors and students<\/a>&nbsp;to contribute&nbsp;solutions to&nbsp;the biggest aeronautical challenges of the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;century.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A&nbsp;decade later,&nbsp;NASA has&nbsp;made a total of $220 million in awards to&nbsp;33 teams over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/armd\/tacp\/ui\/uli\/uli-projects-by-round\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">eight rounds of&nbsp;solicitations<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Smooth flying<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>One of the&nbsp;earliest selected&nbsp;ULI&nbsp;teams&nbsp;was led by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/aeronautics\/flight-innovation\/james-coder-university-of-tennessee-knoxville\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">James Coder<\/a>,&nbsp;who at the time was&nbsp;an aerospace engineering professor at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.&nbsp;His team&nbsp;worked on technology that would&nbsp;smooth the airflow around a wing to make it more efficient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Technically known as slotted&nbsp;natural&nbsp;laminar flow&nbsp;(SNLF)&nbsp;wings,&nbsp;Coder&nbsp;has called the idea a potential game changer for commercial airliners.&nbsp;The more efficient wing&nbsp;would&nbsp;mean less drag on&nbsp;an&nbsp;airplane,&nbsp;which in turn&nbsp;could&nbsp;help airlines save money&nbsp;on&nbsp;fuel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Coder credits ULI for not only helping to prove&nbsp;the technology\u2019s&nbsp;effectiveness&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;with the aid of&nbsp;wind tunnel testing at&nbsp;NASA\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/ames\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ames Research Center<\/a>&nbsp;in California \u2013 but for providing students with&nbsp;an&nbsp;experience they&nbsp;couldn\u2019t&nbsp;get elsewhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"hds-media hds-module wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"margin-left-auto margin-right-auto nasa-block-align-inline\">\n<div Tennessee\/Knoxville<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cAfter 10 years&nbsp;industry remains interested in&nbsp;the&nbsp;SNLF technology&nbsp;and&nbsp;I am optimistic for good reason about its future,\u201d Coder said.&nbsp;\u201cAnd&nbsp;project alumni have gone on to do many wonderful things and leverage what they did and learned through the ULI.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With ULI experience prominent on their resumes, several of the students&nbsp;on Coder\u2019s team&nbsp;wound up with jobs in industry&nbsp;\u2013 such as&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;and&nbsp;Lockheed Martin&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;and&nbsp;government labs. One is&nbsp;currently&nbsp;a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/careers\/pathways\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA Pathways<\/a>&nbsp;intern working on&nbsp;his PhD.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now at&nbsp;Pennsylvania State University, Coder&nbsp;remains&nbsp;a strong advocate for ULI.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&nbsp;goes above and beyond simple workforce development,\u201d he said.&nbsp;\u201cWe recognized early on the value-add of&nbsp;ULI&nbsp;is the students themselves. While we could have just trained students&nbsp;en&nbsp;masse, we wanted to put them&nbsp;in the front seat of technical leadership on the project.&nbsp;I think this&nbsp;was&nbsp;a very successful&nbsp;strategy that&nbsp;benefited&nbsp;the project and the students as they embarked on their&nbsp;careers.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mighty morphing<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n<p>Forrest Carpenter is another example of a student whose ULI support led to work after graduation \u2013 in this case at NASA.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking on the ULI project was an incredible experience, one I will always be thankful for and will remember fondly,\u201d Carpenter said.\u202f\u201cI think the project&nbsp;challenged me to be something more than \u2018just an engineer;\u2019 really helping my professional development and giving me a clearer focus on my passion.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a student at Texas A&amp;M, he was part of a team selected by NASA in 2017 to research a novel idea in which a supersonic&nbsp;aircraft&nbsp;could alter its shape to fly more efficiently based on the atmospheric conditions in real time. A follow-on NASA project,&nbsp;GoSWIFT, will flight test the core technologies Carpenter and his ULI team worked on at Texas A&amp;M.
