But what exactly is contractor compliance? Katie Inouye Mednick, founder and CPO of Spark TS explained how these procedures work and underlined how a software built in Europe can benefit the US market.
Contractor compliance is there to ensure that contractors, vendors, sub-contractors hired by a company are adhering to certain requirements. For the railway sector, the two main regulations concern drug and alcohol testing and training, Mednick pointed out. Unfortunately, pressure on contractor compliance increased in the recent past due to a number of fatal incidents across the United States.

A solution for all players

Railcube’s app makes it possible for railway companies to monitor the contractors they hire to make sure that they are performing procedures safely. Hiring contractors, Mednick specified, is more common among smaller companies, as they often are not equipped to carry out all tasks internally.

“Large railroads might do most of the work in-house but bring contractors for specialised projects such as bridges”, she specified. The system, Mednick added, is not only intended for railroads, but also large contractors who rely on sub-contractors. In these cases, responsibility shifts from the railway company to the contractor.

Made in the EU

Railcube’s software was developed in Europe, which means they have to take into account the differences between countries. Thus, the app needs to have a certain degree of flexibility to be able to adapt, depending on where it is being used. This, as Mednick highlighted, gives railcube an edge in the US market too, which might be less fragmented than the European one, but it is still not one fully harmonised system.

Railcube’s flexibility allows it to be customisable and adaptable by the user, who can set it to its own KPIs and standards. It also facilitates integration with infrastructure managers’ systems and can be adjusted to meet different regulatory frameworks. Rather than imposing a one-size-fits-all model, railcube provides a platform that can be modeled after the users’ needs.

“Compliance rules are mostly at a federal level, but there are also specific state regulations and railroads themselves have their own operating practice”, she said. Thus, contractor compliance might not necessarily mean the same thing across the US. Railcube’s ability to be easily customisable is thus a significant vantage point.

Dutch-based software company railcube recently expanded in the US market with the acquisition of Spark TS and added contractor compliance to its portfolio.
