It now connects Stuttgart to Milan. The service responds to the cancellation of the Freiburg-Novara rolling highway. It should help ensure “continued capacity for the intermodal transport of non-craneable semi-trailers across the Alps.”
CargoBeamer, which specialises in transporting semi-trailers by rail, launched the new connection on Monday this week. The service is open to standard craneable as well as non-craneable units. This includes refrigerated and box trailers, waste transport units, as well as containers and swap bodies, the intermodal specialist specifies.

Besides being a response to the discontinuation of the transalpine rolling highway, it also follows the launch of CargoBeamer’s Liège-Domodossola connection between Belgium and northern Italy in January.

“Following the highly successful launch of the Liège-Domodossola service, we are seeing strong momentum and clear demand for additional capacity in intermodal transport between south-west Germany and the Greater Milan area,” explains Boris Timm, COO of CargoBeamer. “Our new service addresses this need directly. With our new partner terminal Milan-Sacconago, we are excellently positioned to serve road and air freight-oriented cargo flows and continue to expand our network in northern Italy.”

Direct access to the Milan market

The Stuttgart-Milan service starts with a frequency of 4 weekly round trips between the DUSS Terminal in Kornwestheim, close to Stuttgart, and the Terminal Malpensa Intermodale in the Milan metropolitan area (Sacconago). This is set to grow to 5 round trips in the medium term, with SBB Cargo taking care of traction.

CargoBeamer explains that the service succeeds the previously operated connection between Stuttgart-Kornwestheim and Domodossola. It operates with increased frequency and a more suitable end destination. Customers often want to reach the Milan area, says the intermodal specialist. For that reason, the Terminal Malpensa Intermodale is a more attractive destination, as it is located closer to Milan than Domodossola and offers quick access to the highway network.

Future loading units in European Combined Transport – what is the role of the semi-trailer?

Intermodal logistics provider CargoBeamer has launched a new transalpine service.
