The landscape often appears dry and brown, interrupted by <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/glacial-lakes-of-patagonia-49614\/\" rel=\"noopener\">colorful glacier-fed lakes<\/a>, but a storm in early April 2026 blanketed swaths of the land in white. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/terra\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Terra<\/a>\u00a0satellite captured this image of the snowy Patagonian Desert on the morning of April 3.<\/p>\n<p>Early fall has been wetter than normal in southern Patagonia, said atmospheric scientist\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dgf.uchile.cl\/rene\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ren\u00e9 Garreaud<\/a>\u00a0of the Universidad de Chile, noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncei.noaa.gov\/products\/climate-data-records\/precipitation-cmorph\" rel=\"noopener\">satellite-based estimates<\/a> showed above-average precipitation from late March through early April. In this detailed Landsat image, a stark snow line appears along the outlet of Lago Argentino. Also note the color of the water. Lago Argentino and other nearby lakes contain an abundance of fine sediment, or <a href=\"https:\/\/nsidc.org\/cryosphere\/glossary\/term\/glacier-flour\" rel=\"noopener\">glacial flour<\/a>, pulverized by southern Patagonia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/los-glaciares-national-park-argentina-145156\/\" rel=\"noopener\">plentiful glaciers<\/a>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-science-school\/science\/sediment-and-suspended-sediment\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended sediment<\/a> makes the lakes appear milky blue or turquoise.<\/p>\n<p>Though snow was widespread across the desert after the early-season storm, the wintry splendor was fleeting.
