The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/source\/zhu\/ZHU_Training_Page\/tropical_stuff\/sub_extra_tropical\/subtropical.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">subtropical<\/a> weather systems\u2014called <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/science\/weather-explainers\/news\/2025-01-31-weather-words-kona-low-2025\" rel=\"noopener\">kona lows<\/a> near Hawaii\u2014siphoned moisture from the tropics, fueling slow-moving thunderstorms with torrential, destructive rains.<\/p>\n<p>The National Weather Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/hfo\/marchSevere2026\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches (13 to 26 centimeters) throughout the state between March 11 and 15, with some areas seeing more than 30 inches. Weather stations in Honolulu, Hilo, L\u012bhu\u02bbe, and Kahului all broke daily rainfall records.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite image on the right shows swamped neighborhoods and farmland between Mokuleia and Waialua on the island of O\u2019ahu on March 14, 2026, after the first and more destructive storm system hit the island. Plumes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-science-school\/science\/sediment-and-suspended-sediment\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended sediment<\/a> have discolored waters in and around Kaiaka Bay. Hawaii\u2019s volcanic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soils4teachers.org\/files\/s4t\/k12outreach\/hi-state-soil-booklet.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">Hilo soils<\/a> are known for being red due to the high levels of iron and aluminum oxide that accumulate as they weather. For comparison, the image on the left shows the same area on January 25, 2026, before the deluge.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary assessments indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hawaii-flood-oahu-19062f660994694b07c59e0f29fd37cb\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of homes<\/a> in O\u2019ahu sustained damage. Farmers on the island and across the state reported millions of dollars in damage, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilbeat.org\/2026\/03\/hawaii-farmers-confront-11m-in-flood-damage-without-a-safety-net\/\" rel=\"noopener\">news reports<\/a>. The storm produced widespread wind gusts between 60 and 75 miles (97 and 121 kilometers) per hour, with gusts in some places reaching 100 miles per hour. As many as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilbeat.org\/2026\/03\/update-storm-batters-hawai%CA%BBi-causing-floods-blackouts-and-downed-trees\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener\">115,000 O\u2019ahu<\/a> residents faced power outages in the storm\u2019s aftermath.<\/p>\n<p>While the most intense rains had subsided by March 24, forecasters are continuing to monitor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NWSHonolulu\/photos\/a.466765800059970\/3738775726192278\/?type=3&#038;theater\" rel=\"noopener\">unsettled weather<\/a> and the possibility of more flash floods in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/appliedsciences.nasa.gov\/what-we-do\/disasters\/disasters-response-coordination-system\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Disasters Response Coordination System<\/a> has been activated to support the <a href=\"https:\/\/dod.hawaii.gov\/hiema\/march-2026-kona-low\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hawaii Emergency Management Agency\u2019s<\/a> response to the storms.
