{"id":39270,"date":"2024-05-09T10:37:51","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T00:37:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=39270"},"modified":"2024-05-09T10:37:51","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T00:37:51","slug":"network-rail-partners-with-rspb-to-improve-safety-at-lochwinnoch-nature-reserve-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=39270","title":{"rendered":"Network Rail partners with RSPB to improve safety at Lochwinnoch nature reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.networkrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Network Rail<\/a> has teamed-up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB)<\/a> to install new measures to keep wildlife safe at the Lochwinnoch nature reserve.<\/p>\n<p>The two organisations share a boundary fence, which separates the lineside area of the railway and the reserve but that fence was no longer fit for purpose.<\/p>\n<p>One of last remaining wetlands in the west of Scotland, the nature reserve hosts a variety of wildlife including the great crested grebe in spring with hedgehogs and other wildlife all year round.<\/p>\n<p>As part of a seven-week programme of work, engineers from Network Rail put up a new 1821m-long wildlife-friendly fence and installed new bat and bird boxes for nesting animals.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 13 ash trees suffering from ash dieback had to be removed close to the lineside to protect the safety of the railway.<\/p>\n<p>Monoliths and habitat piles for small mammals, reptiles and amphibians were left untouched during the work following consultation with the RSPB.<\/p>\n<p>Hayley Simpson, Network Rail\u2019s scheme project manager for the fencing work said: \u201cThis was a great opportunity to work collaboratively with one of our lineside neighbours, in this case the RSPB, to implement a fencing solution that worked for the railway as well as for the surrounding environment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are grateful to the RSPB at their Lochwinnoch nature reserve for their support and cooperation throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dan Snowdon, RSPB Scotland warden for Lochwinnoch, said: \u201cWe are very happy with the prior engagement and recent work that has been carried out by Network Rail in partnership with the RSPB at our Lochwinnoch site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work at Lochwinnoch has been designed and delivered in a way that closely mimics the natural behaviour of a woodland, with the deadwood and cut timber benefitting wildlife such as beetles, moths and fungi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver time, the next generation of trees will grow in the old trees\u2019 place, giving nature a home for years to come.\u201d<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Network Rail has teamed-up with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) to install new measures to keep wildlife safe at the Lochwinnoch [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":0,"featured_media":39271,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"om_disable_all_campaigns":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_uf_show_specific_survey":0,"_uf_disable_surveys":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[47],"tags":[7,11],"class_list":["post-39270","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-rail-news","tag-transport","tag-usa"],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39270","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=39270"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/39270\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/media\/39271"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=39270"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=39270"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=39270"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
