By early March, flowers had turned areas around Soda Lake a bright shade of yellow, and by mid-month, they had spread even farther. Yellow wildflower blooms are visible amid the dendritic network of streams flanking the alkaline lake, which <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/landsatexplorer\/#mapCenter=-119.86051%2C35.22940%2C13.503&#038;%23038;mode=swipe&#038;%23038;mainScene=2022-05-13%7CNatural+Color+for+Visualization%7C5008346&#038;%23038;secondaryScene=2026-03-05%7CNatural+Color+for+Visualization%7C10232869\" rel=\"noopener\">dries out completely<\/a> during drought years. Soaking rains saturated soils in November and December, bringing rainfall totals to nearly twice the usual level, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/cww.water.ca.gov\/service\/document\/hydroreport\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from the California Department of Water Resources. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/data-maps-tools\/nasa-sport-lis-soil-moisture-products\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA data<\/a> cited in the report showed soil moisture remained well above average for the month of February.<\/p>\n<p>The pulse of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/announcement\/wildflower-season-arrives-carrizo-plain-national-monument-and-other-blm-managed-public\" rel=\"noopener\">early rains<\/a> helped kick-start wildflowers because many seeds need at least a half-inch of rain to wash off their protective coating to germinate, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/jotr\/planyourvisit\/blooms.htm?pp=1#:~:text=Wildflower%20seeds%20need%20a%20half,or%20October%20trigger%20large%20blooms.\" rel=\"noopener\">the National Park Service<\/a>. The warm, dry periods that followed also helped. The display in the Caliente Range was enhanced by a lack of grass thatch, which was burned off in the <a href=\"https:\/\/inciweb.wildfire.gov\/incident-maps-gallery\/calpf-2025-madre-fire\" rel=\"noopener\">Madre fire<\/a> in July 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Reports from experts on the ground indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/calscape.org\/Lasthenia-gracilis-(Common-Goldfields)\" rel=\"noopener\">common goldfield<\/a> (<em>Lasthenia gracilis), <\/em>also called the needle goldfield,<em> <\/em>is responsible for the expanse of yellow near Soda Lake. Individual plants are small, but they often grow in disturbed areas just centimeters apart and bloom simultaneously, creating expansive blankets of color.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"hds-media href=\"https:\/\/www.cnps.org\/flora-magazine\/carrizo-plain-superbloom-25th-anniversary-45425\" rel=\"noopener\">Flora magazine<\/a>, <\/em>Bryce King, lead field botanist for the California Native Plant Society, described the <em>Lasthenia<\/em> blooms there as one of many\u00a0\u201cseemingly unending\u00a0stretches of color\u201d across the valley bottom. <em>Lasthenia<\/em> is a \u201cstaple\u201d of vernal pools and seasonally wet areas, he wrote, but the synchronicity of blooms on the valley floor and surrounding hills during a March visit was \u201cbeyond anything\u201d he had expected.<\/p>\n<p>Teams of NASA scientists are using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/learn\/earth-observation-data-basics\" rel=\"noopener\">remote sensing<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/earth\/nasa-takes-to-the-air-to-study-wildflowers\/\" rel=\"noopener\">study wildflower blooms<\/a> and flowering plants, aiming to develop techniques for tracking blooms over broad areas and tools that can support farmers, beekeepers, and resource managers.
