This involves replacing life-expired signal control cases, track circuit equipment and signals to improve the reliability of rail services.

Renewal of these assets reduces the need for maintenance activity by making potential faults far less frequent. Collapsible signal posts are being installed to avoid the need for working at height, helping to make the network safer for railway colleagues.

The work so far has been carried out during night shifts to minimise passenger disruption. However, the new equipment will be tested and commissioned this weekend, which will mean buses replace trains between Leeds and Knaresborough on Sunday 22 March.

Also taking place will be the refurbishment of signals and crossings (also known as points – the sections of track allowing trains to switch between lines) at Harrogate, making the most of the time when trains will not be running.

On Sunday 22 March, Northern will have buses operating between Leeds and Knaresborough. LNER will have no trains running between Leeds and Harrogate. Tickets can be used on Northern’s replacement bus services between Leeds and Harrogate.

Karen Duffy, Network Rail operations director, said:

“These essential upgrades will replace ageing signalling equipment with modern, more reliable technology that will help keep services running smoothly for passengers and improve safety for railway workers.

“We’re grateful for the public’s patience and understanding as we carry out this work, and we’re sorry to anyone whose journey is affected when buses replace trains between Leeds and Knaresborough on Sunday 22 March.
