A busy section of Metro line serving South Tyneside is to undergo a programme of investment in overhead line. A total of 3,200 metres of new overhead wire will be installed during the project.<\/p>\n

The project will take place during a five-day major line closure between Pelaw and South Shields, Monday 13 April to Friday 17 April. The affected route will re-open to Metro services on Saturday 18 April.<\/p>\n

A replacement bus service will run during the works, calling at or close to all affected Metro stations.<\/p>\n

Scheduling works during the Easter holiday avoids\u202fimpacting\u202fbusier commutes, with less road traffic to help speed up alternative\u202ftravel\u202ftimes on replacement buses.<\/p>\n

Metro operator Nexus\u202fsaid the work\u202fis\u202fpart of its Asset Renewal Programme \u2013 which involves the modernisation of key items of Metro infrastructure,\u202fincluding tracks and overhead lines.\u202f\u202f<\/p>\n

As part of Nexus\u2019 approach to undertake as\u202fmuch\u202fwork as possible during any\u202fplanned line\u202fclosures, other important works\u202finclude track engineering, signalling maintenance, structural inspections, station maintenance and lineside estate management will also be carried out.<\/p>\n

Customers\u202fare being advised\u202fto\u202fplan\u202fahead and allow extra time when travelling through the affected area.\u202f<\/p>\n

Paul Welford, major projects director at Nexus, said:\u202f\u201cThis is a key investment in our overhead lines to ensure that Metro can continue to serve South Tyneside long into the future.<\/p>\n

\u201cOverhead wires are absolutely critical to our operation, and we are currently engaged in a rolling programme of replacing this key part of our infrastructure right across the system.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no\u202fgood time\u202fto close a line,\u202fand we do so to minimise disruption to as many customers\u202fas possible.\u202fOur plans consider school holidays,\u202fto ensure the\u202fleast\u202fpossible\u202fdisruption to customers and the most efficient works.\u202f<\/p>\n

\u201cBy scheduling these works during the schools\u2019 Easter break, we can avoid\u202fimpacting\u202fbusier commutes, and less\u202fcongestion on the roads should\u202fspeed up alternative\u202ftravel\u202ftimes on replacement buses.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers are advised to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time to make their journeys through the affected area. We\u2019re sorry for any inconvenience caused.\u201d<\/p>\n
