{"id":387,"date":"2024-01-09T16:00:39","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T06:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=387"},"modified":"2024-01-09T16:00:40","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T06:00:40","slug":"fortescue-metals-group-rail-operations-expected-to-resume-wednesday-after-wa-derailment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=387","title":{"rendered":"Fortescue Metals Group rail operations expected to resume Wednesday after WA derailment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Rail operations at Andrew Forest&#8217;s Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) have been hit following the derailment of multiple ore cars over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key points:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multiple&nbsp;iron ore cars derailed on a Fortescue train line in the remote Pilbara region on Saturday<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fortescue&#8217;s normal rail operations are suspended but are expected to be up and running on Wednesday&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No one was injured in the incident and Fortescue says an investigation is underway<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident happened on Saturday about 150 kilometres south of Port Hedland in Western Australia&#8217;s remote Pilbara region.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortescue declined to be interviewed but in a statement a spokesperson said an internal investigation was underway to determine the cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;No one was injured in the incident and there is no impact to members of the community,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>December iron ore exports were not impacted, but the spokesperson declined to respond to questions about any impacts on January shipments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rail operations are expected to resume tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been contacted for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2023&#8217;s second major derailment&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the second major derailment to have occurred in 2023, with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2023-06-22\/rio-train-line-reopens-but-clean-up-continues-after-derailment\/102506778\">Rio Tinto reporting an incident<\/a>&nbsp;20 kilometres south of Dampier in June.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/75bc77658584e932e475fcfa17805080?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=570&amp;cropW=858&amp;xPos=81&amp;yPos=0&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" alt=\"A pile of train wagons lie crumpled on the ground alongside a rail line with axles and a yellow crane nearby.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A runaway BHP iron ore train was deliberately derailed 120 kilometres south of Port Hedland in 2018.<em>(ABC News)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rio Tinto said that incident involved a loaded autonomous train with 30 wagons and resulted in the train line being out of action for three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BHP in 2018 deliberately derailed a fully loaded train near Port Hedland after it took off without the driver.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The train was pulling 268 wagons and carrying 30,000 tonnes of iron ore between Newman and Port Hedland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The incident is believed to have cost the mining company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2019-01-22\/iron-ore-train-derailment-inflicts-heavy-financial-blow-on-bhp\/10737426\">hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/17b6bb0297ca7a7e4b3d2787f467516d?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=2688&amp;cropW=4032&amp;xPos=0&amp;yPos=302&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" alt=\"Fortescue Metals iron ore train cars sit alongside machinery.\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The FMG train derailed on New Year&#8217;s Eve, according to a spokesperson.<em>(ABC News: Rachel Pupazzoni)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortescue exported 192 million tonnes of iron ore last financial year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has rail operations running from three major mining hubs, Eliwana, Solomon and Christmas Creek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>FMG in May 2023 began production of magnetite iron ore at its Iron Bridge operation south of Port Hedland, which is transported from the mine to port via a 135-kilometre slurry pipeline.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rail operations at Andrew Forest&#8217;s Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) have been hit following the derailment of multiple ore cars over the weekend.
