Anthony Albanese has been grilled over China\u2019s accusation the Australian military deliberately \u201ctrouble\u201d when it approached Chinese airspace on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister trod lightly in his response when probed on the tense matter by Gareth Parker of Nine, which in partnership with Business News presented \u2018Breakfast with the Prime Minister in Perth on Wednesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chinese foreign ministry on Tuesday claimed China\u2019s jet dropped flares near the Australian Seahawk helicopter in the Yellow Sea because it had been \u201cprovoked\u201d by the Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flares were dropped about 60m above and 300m in front of the chopper, operating off air warfare destroyer HMAS Hobart, while it was enforcing sanction against North Korea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the craft being in international airspace at the time, the Aussies were accused by China of \u201cendangering\u201d its maritime and air security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was swiftly condemned by Australian defence minister Richard Marles, who labelled it \u201cunacceptable\u201d, while the ADF confirmed it had expressed \u201cconcerns to the Chinese Government following an unsafe and unprofessional interaction with a People\u2019s Liberation Army \u2013 Air Force (PLA-AF) fighter aircraft\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister on Wednesday however, claimed that in its own way, China had agreed with Australia\u2019s position that the helicopter was within its right to be flying where it was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you look at the comments, they say, \u2018approaching [Chinese airspace]\u2019. So it\u2019s a confirmation that Australia, the chopper, was in international airspace,\u201d Mr Albanese said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
