The blaze, dubbed the National fire, moved through dry vegetation and sent a plume of smoke billowing over parts of the preserve and nearby communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/aqua\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Aqua<\/a>\u00a0satellite captured this image on the afternoon of February 25. By then, the fire had burned around 24,000 acres (9,700 hectares), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bicy\/learn\/news\/crews-continue-suppression-efforts-on-national-fire.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the National Park Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After carrying smoke southward in previous days, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CIRA_CSU\/status\/2026755769778188627?s=20\">winds<\/a> shifted to start pushing it north by the time Aqua captured this image. According to news reports, the smoke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/state\/florida\/article314828711.html\" rel=\"noopener\">reduced visibility<\/a> and led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gulfcoastnewsnow.com\/article\/florida-brush-fire-big-cypress-alligator-alley\/70504763\" rel=\"noopener\">brief closure<\/a> of I-75\u2014the interstate nicknamed \u201cAlligator Alley\u201d that runs east-west through the northern part of the preserve. It also contributed to <a href=\"https:\/\/lakeonews.com\/stories\/smoke-from-big-cypress-preserve-wildfire-results-in-smog-over-lake-okeechobee,84481\" rel=\"noopener\">smog over Lake Okeechobee<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fire continued to spread over the next several days, reaching just over 35,000 acres (14,000 hectares) by February 28, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/inciweb.wildfire.gov\/incident-publication\/flbcp-national\/morning-daily-update-03-02-2026\" rel=\"noopener\">InciWeb<\/a>. As of March 2, it remained roughly the same size and was 38 percent contained.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fire\u2019s cause remains under investigation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/bicy\/learn\/news\/wildfire-update-big-cypress-national-preserve.htm\" rel=\"noopener\">Officials noted<\/a>, however, that its spread was driven by ample <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/nwacfire\/home\/terminology.html#:~:text=Fuel%3A%20Combustible%20material.%20Includes%2C%20vegetation%2C%20such%20as%20grass%2C%20leaves%2C%20ground%20litter%2C%20plants%2C%20shrubs%20and%20trees%2C%20that%20feed%20a%20fire.%20(See%20Surface%20Fuels.)\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel<\/a>, including vegetation that was dry from persistent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drought.gov\/states\/florida\" rel=\"noopener\">extreme drought<\/a> and damaged by recent frost.
