Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom<\/strong><\/a> announces \u2018landmark deal\u2019 that could see return of regular cross-Channel rail freight<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a \u201clandmark deal\u201d that will pave the way for the return of cross-Channel rail freight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Government-backed deal will see Network Rail<\/strong><\/a> and its property development company Platform4<\/strong><\/a> take long-term control of the Barking Eurohub site in east London, currently owned by Legal & General<\/strong><\/a>, with plans for around \u00a315 million of investment to transform it into an international logistics hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DfT said the #investment<\/strong><\/a> would help to support the return of regular intermodal freight trains, which carry cargo in containers that can be easily transferred across rail, road, and sea, through the Channel Tunnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rail Minister, Peter, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill<\/strong><\/a>, said: \u201cThis deal is a huge opportunity to reinvigorate rail freight by paving the way for the return of regular services through the Channel Tunnel.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeremy Westlake<\/strong><\/a>, #NetworkRail<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s #ChiefExecutive<\/strong><\/a>, said: \u201cFreight is fundamental to the future of our railway, and this landmark agreement highlights the central role it will play as we transition to Great British Railways<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBy securing Barking Eurohub and unlocking more than \u00a315 million of private investment, we\u2019re putting in place the infrastructure needed to restore regular cross Channel intermodal freight services \u2013 supporting British businesses and trade, while also helping to protect our environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michael Barrie<\/strong><\/a>, #HeadofRealEstate<\/strong><\/a> (UK & Europe), L&G, said: \u201cLegal & General is pleased to let this strategically important site to Network Rail, helping bring the Barking Eurohub site into full use. This deal supports vital investment in UK rail infrastructure, unlocking cleaner, faster freight links with Europe and reinforcing the Government\u2019s wider growth agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maggie Simpson OBE<\/strong><\/a>, #DirectorGeneral<\/strong><\/a> of the Rail Freight Group<\/strong><\/a> (RFG), said: \u201cRail freight has a huge role to play in supporting UK trade, and the Channel Tunnel is a vital strategic asset that is presently under utilised.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRail freight is forecast to grow at least 3 per cent per year until 2033, even as freight train movements have almost halved during the last 20 years. There is huge, untapped potential and we want to be at the heart of that growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
