A key solution for this development is putting more semi-trailers on rail, which is what East-West Intermodal Logistics recently did with a new service. \u201cThere is growing interest in rail solutions for transporting semi-trailers from Ukraine to Europe, as driver shortages and war-related uncertainties have increased\u201d, said Alexandra Mirzojeva, Strategic Project Lead at the company.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-69614\"><\/span>EWIL launched a new connection between its terminal in F\u00e9nyeslitke, Hungary, to Lviv, Ukraine, just a couple of weeks ago. Given the current situation in Ukraine, these initiatives come with some difficulties. \u201cOrganising shipments under conditions of constant attacks and damaged infrastructure was the most demanding aspect\u201d, Mirzojeva explained.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, the service, operated through a partnership with Ukrainian Railways and its Polish branch UZ Cargo Poland, provides Lviv with a connection to Hungary and then the rest of Europe. And this is just the beginning, it seems. \u201cWe plan to expand this service to additional cities in Ukraine as demand develops\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\" style=\"box-sizing:border-box;height:0;overflow:hidden;padding-bottom:56.25%;position:relative;width:100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embed-content\" style=\"bottom:0;height:100%;left:0;position:absolute;right:0;top:0;width:100%;\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/embed\/feed\/update\/urn:li:ugcPost:7429900713461174273?compact=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen scrolling=\"no\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; fullscreen; gyroscope\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>\u2018All terminals should be equipped\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Mirzojeva also analysed what needs to be done to make this sector even more popular. \u201cThree key elements are essential: competitive pricing, supportive policies and terminal capabilities\u201d, she pointed out. The first two are needed to make rail financially competitive with other modes, especially road freight. Whether it is governmental subsidies or stricter emission standards, there are plenty of initiatives that could improve the situation.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding terminals, \u201cHungary already has a strong foundation\u201d, Mirzojeva said, \u201cseveral intermodal terminals operate efficiently\u201d. However, there remains room for improvement, especially in the context of semi-trailer transport. \u201cAll terminals along the route should be equipped to handle both craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers\u201d. This factor is \u201ccrucial for smooth and efficient intermodal operations\u201d, she concluded.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 2px solid #0a4e7f; padding: 15px 20px 20px 20px; border-radius: 10px; background-color: #e7f1f8; margin: 20px 0;\">\n<p><strong>Chop-Uzhhorod line<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These links have now been facilitated by the construction of the Chop-Uzhhorod standard gauge line, which connects Ukraine to its southeastern neighbours.
