{"id":374534,"date":"2026-02-23T20:29:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T10:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=189670"},"modified":"2026-02-23T20:29:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-23T10:29:10","slug":"first-trains-return-after-nine-day-manchester-piccadilly-track-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=374534","title":{"rendered":"First trains return after nine-day Manchester Piccadilly track upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/travel\/first-trains-return-after-nine-day-manchester-piccadilly-track-upgrades\/\" title=\"First trains return after nine-day Manchester Piccadilly track upgrades\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/23102712\/Piccadilly-Corridor-track-upgrades-February-2026-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/23102712\/Piccadilly-Corridor-track-upgrades-February-2026-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/23102712\/Piccadilly-Corridor-track-upgrades-February-2026-Network-Rail-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Network Rail and its partner Central Rail Systems Alliance overhauled large sections of track and surrounding infrastructure across six lines between 14-22 February.<\/p>\n<p>During the nine-day closure, engineers replaced:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eleven sets of points<\/li>\n<li>9km of signalling and telecoms cabling<\/li>\n<li>4,000 timber sleepers with modern concrete equivalents<\/li>\n<li>5,500 tonnes of new railway foundation stone (ballast)<\/li>\n<li>Signalling and other lineside equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The newly installed infrastructure updates track which was last replaced in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Impressive time-lapse footage released today (23 February) shows the sheer scale of the effort involved to renew such a large section of railway in a short period of time.<\/p>\n<p>While platforms 1-12 were closed to all passenger trains, improvements also took place inside the station itself to repaint and repoint platform edges, improve emergency lighting and thoroughly litter pick the tracks between platforms to make the most of such a rare closure of the main train shed.<\/p>\n<p>That closure also resulted in one of the largest rail replacement bus operations the city has seen in recent memory, with one bus departing Manchester and Stockport every two and a half minutes in each direction on average.<\/p>\n<p>In total over the nine days, 8,922 rail replacement bus services ran to keep thousands of passengers on the move during the major railway improvements.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-wistia-inc wp-block-embed-wistia-inc\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"B-ROLL - First trains after 9 day closure at Manchester Piccadilly Feb 23 2026 Video\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/euumv5h9bq?dnt=1#?secret=U3eFhQdGMn\" data-secret=\"U3eFhQdGMn\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Brian Paynter, Network Rail capital delivery track director, said: \u201cWe would like to say a big thank you to passengers for their patience while this once-in-a-generation upgrade has taken place over the last nine days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cManchester Piccadilly is one of the country\u2019s busiest stations and it\u2019s a key hub for people travelling to the North West. Upgrading the track over six lines in what\u2019s known as the Piccadilly corridor will make journeys more reliable and the points and signalling systems less prone to faults &#8211; meaning fewer delays for passengers.
