{"id":374,"date":"2024-01-09T15:36:31","date_gmt":"2024-01-09T05:36:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=374"},"modified":"2024-01-09T15:36:31","modified_gmt":"2024-01-09T05:36:31","slug":"kevin-pearson-75-charged-with-causing-deaths-of-kevin-baker-and-mick-warren-in-horror-truck-train-smash-has-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=374","title":{"rendered":"Kevin Pearson, 75, charged with causing deaths of Kevin Baker and Mick Warren in horror truck, train smash has cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A truck driver with more than 50 years experience who allegedly drove into a freight train, leaving two men dead, has been granted bail to live in a caravan park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Tuesday afternoon, Queensland truck driver and pensioner Kevin Maxwell Pearson, 75, faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pensioner, who is undergoing treatment for cancer, was in SA undertaking some \u201coccasional truck driving work\u201d, the court was told.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing via audio visual link from the Port Pirie Magistrates Court, Mr Pearson, still wearing the hi-vis shirt he was arrested in, was granted bail to reside in a caravan park, with conditions that he check into his nearest police station every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The horror collision occurred at 10.30am on New Year\u2019s Eve, leaving Port Augusta men Kevin Baker, 57, and Mick Warren, 48, with fatal injuries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Barrier Highway has since reopened, with speed limits in place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelaidenow.com.au\/news\/south-australia\/tributes-for-excellent-mate-killed-in-train-truck-tragedy-on-barrier-highway\/news-story\/a15e5494c30b323dc0261bf6c9b2c6a7\">Kevin Baker, 57, and Mick Warren, 48, both from Port Augusta<\/a>, were in the locomotive when it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelaidenow.com.au\/news\/south-australia\/crash-between-train-and-truck-closes-barrier-highway-west-of-sansw-border\/news-story\/e67a410c568dd9e3869da3276660b85b\">struck a road train at a level crossing&nbsp;<\/a>on the Barrier Highway just west of the NSW border into South Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/image-2.jpeg\" alt=\"Kevin Pearson, 75, has been charged with causing the death of two men after allegedly colliding with a train. If it pleases the court, my client can reside at the Solomontown Caravan Park and if so, my client will fund his own accommodation as required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe does not have the means to put up such a large cash surety given that he and his wife are both pensioners, and therefore should not be disadvantaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s got no relevant criminal history, and he has some health problems. He is recovering from lung cancer and currently has prostate cancer.
