On February 17, several large blazes broke out on the Oklahoma Panhandle and burned quickly through tens of thousands of acres of grasslands and shrublands. The winds also caused dust storms and low visibility throughout the wider region.<\/p>\n<p>Smoke from multiple fires as well as wind-borne dust streamed across the Plains on the afternoon of February 17, when the <a href=\"https:\/\/modis.gsfc.nasa.gov\/about\/\" rel=\"noopener\">MODIS<\/a>\u00a0(Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) on NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/aqua\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Aqua<\/a>\u00a0satellite acquired this image. The Ranger Road fire, the largest of the group, started that day shortly after noon near Beaver, Oklahoma, and spread rapidly throughout the afternoon. By the evening, it had burned into Kansas and consumed an estimated 145,000 acres (587,000 hectares), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/OklahomaForestry\/posts\/pfbid02t126eTD2cjotD7u5s77cTzwg9564AfGuNf4YJ8hktVqLB8ebpQh66FKRnWKciVZzl\" rel=\"noopener\">the Oklahoma Forestry Service reported<\/a>. Combined with other fires nearby, including the Stevens and Side Road fires near Tyrone, Oklahoma, more than 155,000 acres burned that day, the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>The Ranger Road fire exhibited features of a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/the-fast-fire-threat-153689\/\" rel=\"noopener\">fast fire<\/a>,\u201d a particularly dangerous and destructive type of fire characterized by rapid spread. These blazes usually burn in grasslands and shrublands rather than forests, often occur in autumn and winter when fuels are dry, and are propelled by strong winds. Wind gusts up to 70 miles (110 kilometers) per hour were measured across the Oklahoma and Texas panhandles on February 17, the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSAmarillo\/status\/2023816496611553698\">National Weather Service<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>The fires destroyed several structures, threatened farmland and livestock, and prompted evacuation orders for parts of western Oklahoma and southern Kansas, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/wildfire-explodes-across-oklahoma-kansas-as-extreme-fire-danger-grips-the-plains\/1865006\" rel=\"noopener\">news reports<\/a>. Oklahoma\u2019s governor declared a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.ok.gov\/documents\/executive\/2170.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">disaster emergency<\/a> for counties in the Panhandle.<\/p>\n<p>Persistent winds and dry conditions led to further <a href=\"https:\/\/go.nasa.gov\/3MiWKRJ\" rel=\"noopener\">fire growth<\/a> on February 18. The Ranger Road and Stevens fires approximately doubled in size that day, the Oklahoma Forestry Services <a href=\"https:\/\/ag.ok.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Most-Recent-Fire-Situation-Report.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. On February 19, a <a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/showsigwx.php?warnzone=OKZ003&#038;warncounty=OKC007&#038;%23038;firewxzone=OKZ003&#038;%23038;local_place1=Beaver%20OK&#038;%23038;product1=Red+Flag+Warning&#038;%23038;lat=36.8112&#038;%23038;lon=-100.5169\" rel=\"noopener\">red flag warning<\/a> remained in effect for the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, with forecasts calling for wind gusts up to 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour and very low relative humidity.<\/p>\n<p>Wind-blown dust created other serious hazards across the region. Near Pueblo, Colorado (west of this scene), poor visibility led to a deadly pileup of dozens of vehicles on Interstate 25, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/colorado-dust-dirt-crash-pileup-wind-interstate-ec34aeed8341bb67c46eca228c0652f9\" rel=\"noopener\">according to reports<\/a>.
