South Western Railway celebrates Europe\u2019s largest Korean community at New Malden station\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/18091816\/Cllr-Robert-Kim-Meekyoung-Shin-and-local-Korean-residents_cropped-1-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/18091816\/Cllr-Robert-Kim-Meekyoung-Shin-and-local-Korean-residents_cropped-1-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/18091816\/Cllr-Robert-Kim-Meekyoung-Shin-and-local-Korean-residents_cropped-1-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>South Western Railway (SWR) has unveiled a celebration of Europe\u2019s largest Korean population in a new waiting room at New Malden station, to mark the Lunar New Year.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 20,000 people of Korean heritage live in New Malden&nbsp;in&nbsp;South West&nbsp;London&nbsp;and its vicinity, with locals affectionately dubbing&nbsp;the area&nbsp;\u2018Koreatown\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Lunar New Year, known as Seollal in Korea, is one of the country\u2019s most important holidays.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.prgloo.com\/media\/63116ce2562b4500bfb1557935a5f8fd?width=333&amp;height=250\" alt=\"Meekyoung Shin, Mayor of Kingston and Cllr Robert Kim cutting ribbon\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Meekyoung Shin, the Mayor of Kingston and Cllr Robert Kim (L to R) cutting a ribbon&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following&nbsp;its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/communityrail.org.uk\/new-malden-station-adopters-celebrate-korean-community-and-kimchi-day\/\">temporary display<\/a>&nbsp;at the entrance of the station&nbsp;for Kimchi Day&nbsp;in November last year, SWR has&nbsp;relocated&nbsp;a station&nbsp;sign in&nbsp;Hangeul (Korean)&nbsp;to the&nbsp;space&nbsp;on Platform&nbsp;4.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;unique&nbsp;sign is&nbsp;accompanied by&nbsp;imagery&nbsp;depicting&nbsp;a sculpture of the 18th-century Duke of Cumberland in Cavendish Square&nbsp;by&nbsp;leading&nbsp;Korean artist&nbsp;Meekyoung&nbsp;Shin.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>SWR designed the&nbsp;tribute&nbsp;to New Malden&nbsp;in collaboration with&nbsp;the&nbsp;station\u2019s volunteer&nbsp;adopters, the New\u202fMalden\u202fResidents\u2019&nbsp;Association,&nbsp;and local artists from The Koppel Project in Kingston&nbsp;upon Thames.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor of Kingston&nbsp;upon Thames,&nbsp;Cllr Noel&nbsp;Hadjimichael,&nbsp;officially opened the waiting room for customers&nbsp;today, attended&nbsp;by Shin, Korean local councillor Robert&nbsp;Kim,&nbsp;other&nbsp;residents&nbsp;and&nbsp;SWR colleagues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.prgloo.com\/media\/869679047ef440cea6f64fb7f748405d?width=333&amp;height=250\" alt=\"Meekyoung Shin 1\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Korean artist Meekyoung Shin with an image of her sculture of the Duke of Cumberland<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>David Wilby,&nbsp;Regional&nbsp;Development&nbsp;Manager at&nbsp;South Western&nbsp;Railway,&nbsp;said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe waiting room is a wonderful example of how\u00a0the railway can celebrate local communities and culture.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0also made\u00a0improvements which will\u00a0benefit\u00a0all our customers that travel\u00a0through New Malden station.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cllr Robert Kim, Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis&nbsp;opening is a deeply meaningful moment for New Malden. There was a time in Korea\u2019s history when our language and even our names were suppressed.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo now see Hangeul proudly displayed in our town, and to celebrate Korean culture and art freely in this space, reflects how far we have come.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Malden is home to Europe\u2019s largest Korean community, and this initiative&nbsp;demonstrates&nbsp;how diversity and democratic inclusiveness are not just values we speak&nbsp;about, but&nbsp;values we live.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe partnership with&nbsp;South Western&nbsp;Railway shows how transport hubs can also become cultural spaces&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;bringing communities together and strengthening local pride.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>New\u202fMalden\u202fResidents\u2019 Association, the station adopters, said:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe became station adopters in 2022, and since then the activities we have been involved with, including helping to organise Kimchi Day celebrations and the installation of the station sign in Korean, have helped us to make new friends and contacts in the diverse communities in\u202fNew\u202fMalden.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe station is an important part of our community,&nbsp;so we\u2019re delighted to have a\u202fnew\u202fwaiting room and&nbsp;we\u2019re&nbsp;looking forward to celebrating her 180th\u202fbirthday in December this year.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.prgloo.com\/media\/1cdacf0b88b44e77a819d14891ed2e04?width=333&amp;height=250\" alt=\"New Malden new waiting room\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The new waiting room<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;new&nbsp;waiting&nbsp;room&nbsp;provides a modern and comfortable place for all SWR customers to relax or work while they wait for their trains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Features include an&nbsp;information screen for onward travel updates, accessible automatic entrance doors and workstations and calming features such as ambient lighting&nbsp;and sound dampening floors and walls.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recognising the station\u2019s history, dating back to the early decades of the railway in&nbsp;1846, period windows have been&nbsp;retained&nbsp;thanks to a grant from the Railway Heritage Trust.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;New\u202fMalden\u202fResidents\u2019&nbsp;Association&nbsp;have also installed new planters to add renewed colour and life to the station environment, as well as a small community library for customers and colleagues to share&nbsp;books and magazines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Image credit: South Western Railway<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/people\/happy-seollal-south-western-railway-celebrates-europes-largest-korean-community-at-new-malden-station\/\" title=\"Happy Seollal!
