{"id":362232,"date":"2026-02-04T19:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-04T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=188747"},"modified":"2026-02-04T19:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-02-04T09:00:00","slug":"major-manchester-piccadilly-track-upgrades-due-in-two-weeks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=362232","title":{"rendered":"Major Manchester Piccadilly track upgrades due in two weeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/railway-stations\/major-manchester-piccadilly-track-upgrades-due-in-two-weeks\/\" title=\"Major Manchester Piccadilly track upgrades due in two weeks\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03205907\/Ardwick-corridor-drone-image-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03205907\/Ardwick-corridor-drone-image-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/03205907\/Ardwick-corridor-drone-image-Network-Rail-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beginning on Valentine\u2019s Day (Saturday 14 February) teams from Network Rail and the Central Rail Systems Alliance will be overhauling tracks, points and signalling systems across six lines serving the North West&#8217;s busiest railway station.<\/p>\n<p>The work, which covers nearly a kilometre of the railway, will impact on passengers travelling into Manchester and across the wider region for nine days.<\/p>\n<p>As the gateway to Manchester Piccadilly, any faults on this section of railway can have knock-on effects across the entire railway network.<\/p>\n<p>With some of the current infrastructure dating back to the 1980s &#8211; this major investment will make the railway more reliable and in turn reduce unplanned disruption for passengers and freight.<\/p>\n<p>The investment of nearly eight million pounds (\u00a37.9 million) will see:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eleven sets of points replaced.<\/li>\n<li>9,000 metres of new cabling laid.<\/li>\n<li>Timber sleepers upgraded with modern concrete equivalents.<\/li>\n<li>5,500 tonnes of new railway foundation stone (ballast) replaced.<\/li>\n<li>Work to signalling and other lineside equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The vast scale of the work spanning all main lines means no trains from the south and east of the city will run into Manchester Piccadilly for nine days over February half term (Saturday 14 &#8211; Sunday 22).<\/p>\n<p>Rebecca Rathore, Network Rail&#8217;s North West route strategy director, said: \u201cThis work is vital in order to keep passengers and freight on the move reliably for decades to come across both Greater Manchester and wider North West.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that the part closure of Manchester Piccadilly so we can carry out this work will cause some disruption and we\u2019re thankful for everyone\u2019s patience so we can complete these journey improving upgrades. I&#8217;d advise anyone planning to travel between 14 and 22 February to check <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalrail.co.uk\/\">National Rail Enquiries<\/a> for the smoothest journey possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-wistia-inc wp-block-embed-wistia-inc\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" title=\"FINAL PTC Rebecca Rathore Video\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/tqixuxholb?dnt=1#?secret=FheSY84SzV\" data-secret=\"FheSY84SzV\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>A spokesperson for train operators said: &#8220;This work will improve the reliability of trains running into the region&#8217;s busiest station.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During this essential work, we&#8217;re expecting services to be busy, so please plan ahead and allow extra travel time. Please check with your specific operator or with National Rail Enquiries for detailed journey information.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While the train shed (platforms 1-12) will close, Manchester Piccadilly\u2019s concourse will remain open to the public.
