The navcam images were combined with rover data and placed into a 3D virtual environment, resulting in this reconstruction with virtual frames inserted about every 4 inches (0.1 meters) of drive progress.<br \/>Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>The&nbsp;team for the&nbsp;six-wheeled scientist used&nbsp;a vision-capable&nbsp;AI&nbsp;to&nbsp;create a safe route over the Red Planet\u2019s surface&nbsp;without the input of human route planners.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s&nbsp;Perseverance&nbsp;Mars&nbsp;rover&nbsp;has&nbsp;completed the first&nbsp;drives on another world&nbsp;that were&nbsp;planned&nbsp;by&nbsp;artificial intelligence.&nbsp;Executed on Dec.&nbsp;8&nbsp;and&nbsp;10,&nbsp;and&nbsp;led by the agency\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California,&nbsp;the demonstration used generative AI to create waypoints for Perseverance,&nbsp;a complex decision-making task typically performed manually by the mission\u2019s human rover planners.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis demonstration shows how far our capabilities have advanced and broadens how we will explore other worlds,\u201d said NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. \u201cAutonomous technologies like this can help missions to&nbsp;operate&nbsp;more efficiently, respond to challenging terrain, and increase science return as distance from Earth grows.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;a strong example of teams applying&nbsp;new technology&nbsp;carefully and responsibly in real operations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During the demonstration,&nbsp;the team&nbsp;leveraged&nbsp;a type of&nbsp;generative AI&nbsp;called&nbsp;vision-language&nbsp;models to analyze existing data from JPL\u2019s&nbsp;surface mission dataset.&nbsp;The AI used the same imagery and data&nbsp;that&nbsp;human planners&nbsp;rely on&nbsp;to generate waypoints&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;fixed locations where the rover takes up a new set of instructions \u2014 so that Perseverance could safely navigate the challenging Martian terrain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was led out of&nbsp;JPL\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/roc\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rover Operations Center&nbsp;(ROC)<\/a>&nbsp;in collaboration with Anthropic, using&nbsp;the company\u2019s Claude AI&nbsp;models.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Visualizing Perseverance\u2019s AI-Planned Drive on Mars\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0QtS85SRnOE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">This animation was created using data acquired during the Perseverance rover\u2019s Dec. 10, 2025, drive on the rim of Jezero Crater. <br \/>Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Progress for&nbsp;Mars,&nbsp;beyond<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>Mars is on average about 140 million miles&nbsp;(225 million kilometers)&nbsp;away&nbsp;from Earth.&nbsp;This vast distance creates a significant communication lag, making real-time remote operation&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;or&nbsp;\u201cjoy-sticking\u201d&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;of a rover impossible.&nbsp;Instead, for&nbsp;the&nbsp;past&nbsp;28&nbsp;years, over several missions,&nbsp;rover routes&nbsp;have&nbsp;been planned and executed&nbsp;by&nbsp;human&nbsp;\u201cdrivers,\u201d&nbsp;who&nbsp;analyze&nbsp;the&nbsp;terrain&nbsp;and status data to sketch a route using waypoints,&nbsp;which are&nbsp;usually spaced no more than 330 feet (100 meters) apart to avoid&nbsp;any potential&nbsp;hazards.&nbsp;Then they send the plans via&nbsp;NASA\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/communicating-with-missions\/dsn\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deep&nbsp;Space Network<\/a>&nbsp;to the rover, which executes them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But for Perseverance\u2019s drives on the 1,707 and 1,709 Martian days, or sols, of the mission, the team did something different: Generative AI provided the analysis of the high-resolution orbital imagery from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/one-of-nasas-key-cameras-orbiting-mars-takes-100000th-image\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HiRISE<\/a>&nbsp;(High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera aboard NASA\u2019s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and terrain-slope data from digital elevation models. After identifying critical terrain features \u2014 bedrock, outcrops, hazardous boulder fields, sand ripples, and the like \u2014 it generated a continuous path complete with waypoints.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure&nbsp;the AI\u2019s instructions were fully compatible with the rover\u2019s flight software,&nbsp;the engineering team&nbsp;also processed the drive commands through JPL\u2019s&nbsp;\u201cdigital twin\u201d&nbsp;(virtual replica of the rover),&nbsp;verifying over&nbsp;500,000 telemetry variables before&nbsp;sending&nbsp;commands&nbsp;to Mars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Dec.&nbsp;8, with generative AI waypoints in its&nbsp;memory, Perseverance drove&nbsp;689&nbsp;feet (210&nbsp;meters).&nbsp;Two days later,&nbsp;it drove&nbsp;807&nbsp;feet (246&nbsp;meters).&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fundamental elements of generative AI are showing a lot of promise in streamlining the pillars of autonomous navigation for off-planet driving: perception (seeing the rocks and ripples), localization (knowing where we are), and planning and control (deciding and executing the safest path),\u201d said Vandi Verma, a space roboticist at JPL and a member of the Perseverance engineering team. \u201cWe are moving towards a day where generative AI and other smart tools will help our surface rovers handle kilometer-scale drives while minimizing operator workload, and flag interesting surface features for our science team by scouring huge volumes of rover images.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImagine intelligent systems not only on the ground&nbsp;at Earth, but&nbsp;also&nbsp;in&nbsp;edge applications in our rovers, helicopters, drones, and other surface elements trained with&nbsp;the&nbsp;collective&nbsp;wisdom of&nbsp;our NASA&nbsp;engineers,&nbsp;scientists, and astronauts,\u201d said&nbsp;Matt Wallace,&nbsp;manager&nbsp;of JPL\u2019s Exploration Systems Office.&nbsp;\u201cThat&nbsp;is&nbsp;the&nbsp;game-changing technology we need to establish the infrastructure and systems required for a permanent human presence on the&nbsp;Moon and&nbsp;take the U.S.&nbsp;to Mars and beyond.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"hds-media hds-module wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"margin-left-auto margin-right-auto nasa-block-align-inline\">\n<div class=\"hds-media-wrapper margin-left-auto margin-right-auto\">\n<figure class=\"hds-media-inner hds-cover-wrapper hds-media-ratio-fit \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/e2-pia26645-hyperdrive-overlay.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1366\" height=\"1019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/e2-pia26645-hyperdrive-overlay.png?w=1366\" class=\"attachment-2048x2048 size-2048x2048\" alt=\"An overhead black and white photo of the Martian surface, overlaid with a pair of parallel magenta line tracing the rover&#039;s path.
