{"id":343780,"date":"2026-01-06T18:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-06T08:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=187485"},"modified":"2026-01-06T18:30:00","modified_gmt":"2026-01-06T08:30:00","slug":"preston-station-reopens-after-major-signalling-upgrades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=343780","title":{"rendered":"Preston station reopens after major signalling upgrades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/railway-stations\/preston-station-reopens-after-major-signalling-upgrades\/\" title=\"Preston station reopens after major signalling upgrades\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/06124856\/Signalling-renewals-at-Preston-Station-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/06124856\/Signalling-renewals-at-Preston-Station-Network-Rail-485x360.jpg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/06124856\/Signalling-renewals-at-Preston-Station-Network-Rail-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Passengers are being thanked for their patience after Preston station reopened on Monday 5 January following a major signalling upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s seen specialist teams working since New Year&#8217;s Day to replace 1960s equipment with three modern signalling gantries at the north end of the station, installing five new signal posts and seven new LED signal heads.<\/p>\n<p>The new signals will be clearer for train drivers to see helping services run more smoothly through the station.<\/p>\n<p>The newer technology will also need less maintenance than the older bulb signals they replace &#8211; reducing the need to close the railway for repairs in future.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail and its principal contractor VolkerRail started work on 1 January during a rare full 100-hour closure of Preston station.<\/p>\n<p>The project was just one of a swathe of journey improving upgrades between London and Cumbria over the festive season.<\/p>\n<p>The Christmas and New Year work has seen a combined investment of nearly \u00a3200 million on the West Coast Main Line, which forms part of a much larger \u00a3400 million investment over the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>Christian Irwin OBE, Network Rail North West and Central region capital delivery director, said: \u201cWe are investing hundreds of millions of pounds to improve future journeys on the West Coast Main Line and these latest projects will make real differences to passenger and freight journeys.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would like to thank passengers for their patience during our work in Preston and also across the wider network this festive season.
