Aside from the Gautrain project being recognised as one of the most successfully executed Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in this region, it also exemplifies the true essence of localisation and skills transfer when carried out correctly. This transition is evident in the journey of the Bombela Operating Company (BOC)<\/strong>. Initially managed by an international team from its parent company, RATP-Group<\/strong> based in France, the BOC, responsible for operating and maintaining the Gautrain system under the Concession, has evolved into predominantly a South African-operated enterprise. Due to the integration of localised skills, capabilities, and operational support, BOC stands in a prime position to not only continue with the Gautrain services, but also offer their seamless multimodal integrated public transport system solutions, into the rest of the Southern African Region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Having honed its skills in this domain for over 70 years, BOC was well-prepared when operations in South Africa commenced in 2010. A team of experts from RATP was at the forefront\u2014I can attest to this, as I was among them!
\nAround 15 of these experts undertook the essential task of training. We adopted a methodical approach: first, training local trainers who then spearheaded what we term ‘cascade training.’ The progressive transfer of knowledge and expertise is underscored by the fact that, from an initial large contingent of RATP experts, today, out of 500 employees, I am the only representative from RATP. This transition epitomises a successful and significant skills transfer. While the French influence was pivotal, the local team confidently takes the lead. South Africa, boasting the most advanced railway network in the region, is ripe for growth. While numerous upgrade, refurbishing, and modernisation projects are in motion, there\u2019s vast potential in efficiently bridging freight transport between rail and road. Reflecting on RATP Group\u2019s involvement in projects such as the Channel Tunnel linking France and England showcases the opportunities available. Such integration, where heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) are safely loaded onto trains to bypass natural obstacles, is a viable solution for South Africa, especially in areas where truck movement hinders traffic fluidity.<\/p>\n

Expanding on these insights, the Gautrain system is an emblematic precursor for what can be achieved on a grander scale.
