{"id":33655,"date":"2024-05-04T10:34:59","date_gmt":"2024-05-04T00:34:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=33655"},"modified":"2024-05-04T10:35:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-04T00:35:07","slug":"koonibba-cements-place-in-australias-space-race-with-launch-of-rocket-powered-by-candle-wax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=33655","title":{"rendered":"Koonibba cements place in Australia&#8217;s space race with launch of rocket powered by candle wax"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The small town of Koonibba on the edge of the Nullarbor continues to play an integral part in the nation&#8217;s space industry with the launch of one of the largest rockets from Australian soil from a private facility on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Koonibba community first held talks with South Australian launch company Southern Launch six years ago with plans to develop a launch pad on a wheat paddock on the state&#8217;s far west.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, together with Southern Launch, the town hosted<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-09-19\/australias-first-private-rocket-blasts-off-from-koonibba\/12681258\">&nbsp;Australia&#8217;s first commercial, space-capable rocket launch in September 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The venture has already brought jobs and educational benefits,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-09-19\/australias-first-private-rocket-blasts-off-from-koonibba\/12681258\">&nbsp;<\/a>culminating in the launch of the 11.5-metre carbon fibre SR75 rocket made by German company HyImpulse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/c86bc0e0613e7c68d863c16c186bdf35?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=2688&amp;cropW=4032&amp;xPos=0&amp;yPos=286&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" alt=\"Five people standing on right in large white tent, looking rocket lying on its side, rocket obscured \" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&nbsp;Southern Launch&#8217;s Lloyd Damp (right) and Koonibba Community leaders Corey McLennan and Geraldine Ware.<em>(ABC Eyre Peninsula: Jodie Hamilton)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Koonibba Community CEO Corey McLennan said the collaboration with space companies would yield more benefits for the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Overseas customers coming to little old Koonibba, who would have thought that?&#8221; Mr McLennan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A crowd of locals and VIPs, who travelled to Koonibba from across Australia and Europe, witnessed the historic achievement on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/d5cfdbd646d642cd2804a2846ac49476?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=3333&amp;cropW=5000&amp;xPos=0&amp;yPos=0&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" alt=\"Two smiling students\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Students from Koonibba Aboriginal School attended a STEM conference in Adelaide with the help of Southern Launch.<em>(ABC Eyre Peninsula: Amelia Costigan)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Southern Launch CEO Lloyd Damp said the launch was significant for the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully, over the next 12 to 18 months we&#8217;ll be able to make space launch an everyday phrase,&#8221; Mr Damp said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking forward to the next one<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Koonibba Community Aboriginal Corporation chairperson Geraldine Ware said the launch was an incredible achievement for the community and a shining light for First Nations people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We had more than 30 people from the community working throughout the campaign and to come together and see it launch was amazing,&#8221; Ms Ware said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We look forward to the next launch from our launch pad.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Light this Candle mission was the inaugural launch attempt of HyImpulse&#8217;s SR75 rocket which trialled a hybrid propulsion technology, using solid paraffin fuel, similar to candle wax, and liquid oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live-production.wcms.abc-cdn.net.au\/3cfb27c54069d2c511368031aafe19fe?impolicy=wcms_crop_resize&amp;cropH=3333&amp;cropW=5000&amp;xPos=0&amp;yPos=0&amp;width=862&amp;height=575\" alt=\"Rocket scientist in glasses and high vis vest stands in front of the rocket.\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">HyImpulse CEO Christian Schmierer.<em>(ABC Eyre Peninsula: Amelia Costigan)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HyImpulse CEO Christian Schmierer said the technology was unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are basically using the energy of the candle wax to propel the rocket and this is a very innovative system, which no one in the world has ever flown before,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rocket will reach an altitude of 60 kilometres in two minutes, travelling at about 1000 kilometres per hour, before parachuting back to Earth landing seven minutes after take off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rocket is expected to land 75 kilometres away from the launch pad and will be retrieved by helicopter this weekend for testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;During the flight we have a telemetry link and we sample around 300 different sensors in the rocket that tells us the performance .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;So actually what we want is this set of data,&#8221;
