{"id":3353,"date":"2024-01-18T11:08:45","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T01:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=3353"},"modified":"2024-01-18T11:08:47","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T01:08:47","slug":"you-dont-just-rush-out-and-start-spending-money-slow-going-for-high-speed-rail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=3353","title":{"rendered":"\u2018You don\u2019t just rush out and start spending money\u2019: Slow going for high-speed rail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Labor\u2019s promised high-speed rail network from Brisbane to Melbourne cannot be rushed, says federal Transport Minister Catherine King, as the opposition slams the government\u2019s progress on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Sydney Metro executive Tim Parker on Monday took the helm of the federal government\u2019s High Speed Rail Authority \u2013 a body legislated in November 2022 to identify and secure rail corridors while overseeing the construction and operation of the network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.ffx.io\/images\/$zoom_0.136%2C$multiply_0.7725%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_0\/t_crop_custom\/q_86%2Cf_auto\/fa7d904444b1a86f7a7ba6812879b6f48be819ef\" alt=\"Transport Minister Catherine King said: \u201cYou don\u2019t just rush out and start spending money before you know how much a project\u2019s actually going to cost.\u201d\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Transport Minister Catherine King said: \u201cYou don\u2019t just rush out and start spending money before you know how much a project\u2019s actually going to cost.\u201dCREDIT:&nbsp;ALEX ELLINGHAUSEN<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and King said high-speed rail networks operated around the world and the government remained determined to deliver the \u201ctransformative project\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat the expectation is this year is the business case will be done, planning work undertaken, geotechnical work undertaken and also recommendations to government about how the project is financed,\u201d King told a press conference in Newcastle on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to get the structures right, the governance right, the planning right, the engineering right. You don\u2019t just rush out and start spending money before you know how much a project\u2019s actually going to cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the lead-up to the 2022 election, Albanese pledged a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p59l8m\">$500 million down payment<\/a>&nbsp;for the Sydney to Newcastle leg of the project, saying: \u201cMy vision is for high-speed rail that runs from Brisbane to Melbourne.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2023, the rail authority replaced the Morrison government\u2019s National Faster Rail Agency, which was created to steer a $4 billion proposal for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/link\/follow-20170101-p516fu\">fast rail link between Melbourne and Geelong<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2013 election, former prime minister Kevin Rudd\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/politics\/federal\/high-speed-rail-back-on-track-20130825-2sjxs.html\">pledged to begin planning for a Melbourne to Sydney link that could be running by 2035<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project never began after Labor lost in a landslide election to former prime minister Tony Abbott, which Albanese said was a pity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had senior people, we\u2019d done the work.
