{"id":334795,"date":"2025-12-28T13:52:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-28T03:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=334795"},"modified":"2026-02-10T11:44:54","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T01:44:54","slug":"v-line-free-travel-is-put-through-their-pace-with-trains-put-through-their-paces-in-festive-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=334795","title":{"rendered":"V\/Line Free Travel is tested with trains put through their paces in the festive season"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">A interesting weekend as I got experience  array of situations on the rail system<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">20\/12\/25  unstable sultry day was dog&#8217;s breakfast!!!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>VN10<\/strong> was stabled at<strong> 3B<\/strong> when I arrived and good crowd was forming \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>N452<\/strong> couple up <strong>06:55<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On board <strong>07:26 and train leave bang on  ime 07:39<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>N12 <\/strong>from Swan Hill goes past our trains on the cross the short set with only <strong>4 cars<\/strong>!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> in my observation that train should have <strong>5 cars <\/strong>as the early morning service is often crowded toward the city especially when there is events on in the CBD etc during the year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>10:02 arrived at Bendigo<\/strong> but we didn&#8217;t leave as expected.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Conductor does a head count and I started to feel this was not normal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PA <\/strong>advice train due <em><strong>technical issues<\/strong><\/em> train is delayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"> <em>Shortly after PA sound agains and Swan Hill train is <strong>terminated<\/strong> at Bendigo!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>10:16 <\/strong> the advice read as The 07:40 Southern Cross &#8211; Swan Hill service will end early at Bendigo and no longer run to Swan Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/i\/status\/2002156309974573320\" title=\"\">https:\/\/x.com\/i\/status\/2002156309974573320<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">What mess Free Travel &amp; lots of people were travelling &amp; very warm at Bendigo!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>On hearing this I had made other plans and one them was not waiting for a coach to continue onward beyond Bendigo as I was going stay for bit and observe what happens before heading off to town for lunch!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-26-at-19.50.02-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-338643\" style=\"width:568px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-26-at-19.50.02-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-26-at-19.50.02-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-26-at-19.50.02-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-12-26-at-19.50.02.jpeg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">N452 suffers brake issue and terminated at Bendigo on 26 December 2025<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Train was emptied and coaches that was arranged to travel beyond <strong>Bendigo -Swan Hill &amp; Mildura etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driver stuck around for the train movement into the siding before Bendigo station next to the shopping centre&#8217;s  car park to get it off the mainline <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">On returning from lunch was surprised<strong> <\/strong>with what I saw at Bendigo as I thought the people had  gone on the coaches!!!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Huh? why were coaches just arriving for Mildura and Beyond Bendigo?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The large crowd of passengers from my train was waiting for nearly 2 hrs  in the heat!!! \ud83e\udd2f<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>By the advice at the time the locomotive had suffered brake issues \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I understand that anything involving the braking system  was deemed as <strong>safety critical item<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> <\/strong>in railway safe working this can render the train unserviceable and unfit to carry passengers onboard.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>11:15 <\/strong><em>V\/Line website<\/em> Advice comes out<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The 13:35 Swan Hill &#8211; Southern Cross service will originate from Bendigo at 16:01 and not Swan Hill.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-26-19.32.43-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-338644\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500220283725438;width:347px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-26-19.32.43-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-26-19.32.43-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/2025-12-26-19.32.43.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">the 16:01 Southern Cross being VLocity 3&#215;1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>don&#8217;t think a big crowd of people will be happy being crammed in a <\/em><strong><em>3&#215;1 <\/em>VLocity IMU rail car!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">I watched the Loco N452 with N460 at Bendigo leave empty cars back Southern Cross to go the workshop <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">I decided to take the Southern Cross VLocity 3&#215;2 back <strong>15:25<\/strong> as I was not fond of the idea of squashing myself in 3&#215;1 VLocity or risk standing or sitting on the floor at <strong>16:01<\/strong> with the crowd from Swan Hill!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>16:58<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Digger&nbsp; rest track sections <\/strong>are brutal on the VLocity&#8217;s  bogies &amp; components!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> could hear the diaphragm between the cars and internals  rattling around being shaken up as  it goes faster then a old loco hauls!!!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Felt the bump through the seat and was bounced to point It felt like the bogies spring bottomed out at one point.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>17:07<\/strong> <strong>Nearly stopped mid section <\/strong>just then VLoctiy felt the speed of the VLocity was reduced and took awhile to get moving!!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A clue on why the newer trains has problems  on route? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">As being bounced like that at high speed repeatedly in time doesn&#8217;t do it any good with repeated impact on connections within be it electrical or mechanical are often affect by the jarring impactive forces exerted on it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>17:35 <\/strong>advice from V\/line Geelong on website on route when I got off the train was heading to Shepparton on <strong>6A <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Coaches are replacing trains between Wyndham Vale and Deer Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Further travel advice to follow.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The upside when I came back I saw <strong>VN10 <\/strong>being shunted by the Y class to the workshop after being detached from <strong>N452<\/strong> and <strong>N460 <\/strong>set up to pull <strong>N12 <\/strong>to Swan Hill that evening on arrival  on <strong>3B<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Bedlam there!!! Customer staff and crew and crowds were on platform waiting for further advice<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"> later near <strong>18:00 <\/strong>on when looked some service could resume  saw VLocity <strong>3&#215;2<\/strong> leave on <strong>3A <\/strong>and was so overcrowded seats all taken, people packed in tightly in it standing in Aisle and doorways!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Sadly I saw some people unable to board and missed their service as customer staff some deemed the train too crowded for them to board as I shuffled past  <strong>3B<\/strong> checking out the evening Swan Hill Service!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">21\/12\/25-VN17 with loco N467<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A rather stormy Sunday and unstable weather on route <strong>VN17<\/strong> was late shunting in the platform <strong>07:27<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coupled up <strong>07:39<\/strong>  &amp; <strong>07:57<\/strong> tech guys finished check it out to ensure the train was okay to run<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boarded <strong>08:00 BZN252<\/strong> and ate breakfast and dozed off till Kyneton<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lightning<\/strong> was seen and <strong>thunder<\/strong> was heard from train beforehand at the time whist in motion, it was not good feeling!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">09:57 hard braking train slow down and stopped near the tunnel  before Castlemaine!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Shortly after, train had <strong>stopped briefly<\/strong><em><strong>10:00!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>PA sounded &#8220;Customers do note they will slight delay due to lightning strike will advise as more info comes out.<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">This impacted the return service from Swan Hill  which happened to be N12 from Castlemaine!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">V\/line notifications came out shortly after:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>Service Delay &#8211; Bendigo line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The 06:54 Swan Hill &#8211; Southern Cross service is delayed by 20 minutes due to a safety incident. We are sorry for the delay in your journey. [10:15 21\/12]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Beside that hiccup and arriving at  13:16 at Swan Hill it was a lot better than the day before!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">It was very nice relaxing return after&#8230;..a good day&#8217;s outing pulled in 21:14 and saw <strong>VN14<\/strong> in middle road with <strong>BZN266!<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As <strong>16\/12<\/strong> had <strong>VN14 <\/strong>and notice only 4 cars and wonder what happen to the  other BZN? As  she&#8217;s  missing a carriage!!!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">I haven&#8217;t seen that carriage since it was on <strong>N12<\/strong> and now <strong>VN14<\/strong> is now 5 cars!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>As soon we boarded, VN14 suddenly has intermittent issue shut down loses power light air-conditioning and after reseting it they got us off and gave us VN17 in it&#8217;s place!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">As currently on their working timetable for weekdays and weekends is <strong>two loco haul carriage sets<\/strong> making up the haul train service at the moment that go all the way to and foe to Swan Hill <strong>one in morning and one early evening<\/strong> on rotating basis on the public roster!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Credit to those all involved : <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>for the hard work involved  shunt in spare set on standby by in Melb yard and coupling N460 and  train control able to arrange a path to run the service, better in then usual procedure which often a VLocity and coach for the service<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the messy start of <strong>07:39 <\/strong> and <strong>late arrival at Swan Hill <\/strong>service returned to <strong>Southern Cross<\/strong> that day <strong>on time 18:11<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">It seem from my observations and was advise there are currently 4 sets covering <strong>VN10, VN14 ,VN17<\/strong> and <strong>N12<\/strong> the Swan Hill and few locos for unforeseen issues that occur without warning!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Conclusion: <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"> but again to some there&#8217;s  no harm adding one more to reduce a the fact since the change of rolling stock it can be rostered in for substitute train in place of the repeated coach replacements on the long suffering Warrnambool and Gippsland line since it&#8217;s removal late last year Apr 25 since all were replaced on regular runs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img href=\"https:\/\/search.app\/mbzac\" title=\"\">https:\/\/search.app\/mbzac<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Commuter chaos across the Geelong line, with a number of train services cancelled on Monday morning due to delayed train crew.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>V\/Line were unable to confirm whether or not further services would be cancelled.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Pretty rough for them to point it the train crew, as they operate the trains and when issues on route happen out their control ie: <strong>Rail Equipment Faults <\/strong>of cause they will get stuck on the trains!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As Mon early morning  I became aware of issues checking on Vline Geelong track status on their website it read why did I read <strong>animal strike<\/strong> messed up the Geelong Line on Monday?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When <strong>animal strike<\/strong>s occur in the the system on a train, the train has taken out of service to the bio wash for cleaning and inspected for damage\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I understand there two of them around the state doing this service <strong>Nth Dynon and Bendigo<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Currently there&#8217;s Workshop Melb Yard, Nth Dynon Bendigo, Pakenham and Ballarat by what I am aware of currently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since it <strong>20 min between services<\/strong> on the Geelong line and when things goes wrong the knock on effect on the line of service going both way can be quite chaotic&#8230;.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>as some lines currently  are <strong>single track operations  both ways with crossing loops<\/strong> ie: the Tunnel near Geelong and beyond Waurn Ponds!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I experience this a Waurn Pond service arrived at Waurn Ponds from Southern Cross, somehow lost a bit of time and after that had services <strong>terminating <\/strong>at Marshall and <strong>Originating <\/strong>from Marshall!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How we manage to lose time to mess up the other service behind I don&#8217;t know! \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I got back okay to and from Warun Ponds, but the other services behind our VLocity debatable&#8230;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>25\/12\/25 : ride on Christmas day I had VN17 all went well until the train was vandlised mid route before Bendigo<\/strong> 19:44 notification came out!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Service Delay-Bendigo line<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The 16:35 Swan -Southern Cross service is by 23 minutes due to vandalism. We sorry for the delay in your journey. [19:44 25\/12] <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong> <\/strong>After arriving <strong>40 min behind time <\/strong>I shuffled off beside the train as I left <strong>3B<\/strong> I saw the broken interior window inside the<strong> ACN of VN17<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> <em> Strangley, because of late running <strong>I thought saw a PH Van and 4 cars which is N12  <\/strong>behind the loco<\/em> of the service heading to Swan Hill when the website showed it 5 cars unless it&#8217;s <strong>VN10 <\/strong>with one less car before Kyneton!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Was puzzled on why they decided to use the same set the day after which some were aware of a broken window on that particular set when they was spares in the yard <strong>VN14 and N12<\/strong>?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Live Disruptions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Service Alert -Bendigo Line<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">The 07:40 Southern Cross &#8211; Swan Hill will end early at Bendigo and no longer to Swan Hill due to Vandalism. Passenger travelling Bendigo can board replacment coaches between Bendigo and Swan Hill to complete their journery. We are sorry for the delay in your journey. [05;30 26\/12]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the  time it take to run them empty cars movements to each workshop facilities in Vic considering the
