A long overdue replacement for the 1907-era\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victorian_Railways_A2_class\">A2 class<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/4-6-0\">4-6-0<\/a>, their development and construction was repeatedly delayed due to financial constraints caused by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Depression\">Great Depression<\/a>\u00a0and later the manpower and materials shortages of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a>\u00a0and the immediate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Postwar\">postwar<\/a>\u00a0period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1080px-R761-mx1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1080px-R761-mx1-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1080px-R761-mx1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1080px-R761-mx1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/1080px-R761-mx1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Orders eventually totalling 70 locomotives were placed with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_British_Locomotive_Company\">North British Locomotive Company<\/a>of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glasgow\">Glasgow<\/a>. Once initial teething problems were overcome, R class locomotives proved to be a success and their power and speed enabled faster timetabled services. However, they were almost immediately superseded by mainline\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diesel-electric_locomotive\">diesel-electric<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_locomotive\">electric locomotives<\/a>\u00a0on the Victorian Railways from 1952 onwards. With successive orders of diesel-electric locomotives through the 1950s and 1960s gradually displacing them, all but seven of the class were withdrawn and cut up for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scrap\">scrap<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"896\" height=\"592\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/R711WCR.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/R711WCR.jpg 896w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/R711WCR-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/R711WCR-768x507.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four of the remaining locomotives were later restored to operating condition between 1984 and 1998. These have seen use ranging from hauling special\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Restored_train\">heritage train<\/a>\u00a0services through to substituting for modern diesel-electric locomotives on regular\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intercity_rail\">intercity rail<\/a>\u00a0services run by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/V\/Line\">V\/Line<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Coast_Railway_(Victoria)\">West Coast Railway<\/a>.
