VIIA and Naviland Cargo president B\u00e9n\u00e9dicte Colin indicated that six weekly round trips were planned from January 2026 compared to the current three.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-67675\"><\/span>\u201cThis increase in capacity is in response to growing customer demand, particularly from Turkey but also from local customers, to whom we will offer an integrated rail-road solution,\u201d she explained speaking to the media at the inauguration of the company\u2019s new rail-road combi terminal at the French Mediterranean port earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p>In 2026, VIIA is targeting the transport of 22,500 semi-trailers and containers between S\u00e8te and Calais, rising to 40,000 annually in the longer term, she added. Among VIIA&#8217;s partners in the S\u00e8te-Calais rolling highway is the Danish shipping company DFDS, which operates six weekly sailings between two Turkish ports and the port of S\u00e8te.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"readmore\">\n<div class=\"readmore-item\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/intermodal\/2025\/10\/17\/viia-launches-two-new-rail-highway-services\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/VIIAs-new-terminal-in-Se%CC%80te-128x128.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"readmore-thumbnail\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"readmore-info\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.railfreight.com\/intermodal\/2025\/10\/17\/viia-launches-two-new-rail-highway-services\/\" class=\"readmore-title\">VIIA launches two new rail highway services<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<h2>SNCF CEO present at inauguration<\/h2>\n<p>Also present at the inauguration of the S\u00e8te combi terminal was the new SNCF Group CEO, Jean Castex, a former French prime minister. He told the gathering that the development of rail freight was of national interest. \u201cThe carbon footprint of rail freight transport is excellent, as is its energy rating. However, compared to the volume of trucks travelling on the A9 motorway (in the vicinity of S\u00e8te), rail freight only has a market share of 3% compared to road). We must absolutely take action.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Castex pointed to the uneven playing field between the two transport modes with road enjoying an unfair competitive advantage over rail freight whose fixed costs are \u201ca lot heavier\u201d and \u201cneeds to be supported by the public authorities.\u201d He also underlined that boosting rail freight in the region could not be done without the benefit of a new high-speed rail line between Montpellier and Perpignan, along France\u2019s Mediterranean coast \u2013 a project which has triggered a fair degree of opposition for some local municipalities and residents. \u201cConsultation phases are underway.
