The Scottish Government has set out a refreshed vision for a cleaner, modernised rail network with the publication of its updated decarbonisation strategy, Rail Recharged: Scotland\u2019s Fleet Transition Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Building on progress since 2020, the plan shifts focus toward fleet renewal and a proportionate, value-driven approach to cutting emissions. The strategy outlines how new trains, targeted electrification, and wider climate action will support a just transition while making rail more attractive and affordable for passengers.<\/p>\n

A Transport Scotland spokesperson said: “This Scottish Government remains committed to decarbonising the passenger rail network, which also has clear benefits for rail freight services.<\/p>\n

“Since the original Rail Services Decarbonisation Action Plan was published in 2020, we\u2019ve electrified 23 km of track, brought six new stations into operation, and are set to open the newly enhanced and electrified \u00a3140 million East Kilbride line this December.<\/p>\n

“The update on that plan – \u2018Rail Recharged: Scotland\u2019s Fleet Transition Strategy\u2019 \u2013 is now published. It sets out a credible strategy to deliver decarbonisation in a proportionate way that achieves best value for the public purse.<\/p>\n

“It acknowledges the challenges we face in the post-covid landscape and the impact these have had on previous decarbonisation commitments. It also demonstrates the ways in which we are making rail more attractive for existing and new passengers by progressing work to replace ScotRail\u2019s oldest fleets with more modern trains. This is coupled with the removal of peak fares for good which is putting more money back in passengers\u2019 pockets.<\/p>\n

“The updated strategy demonstrates how rail will support wider Just Transition commitments and highlights its focus on more efficient journeys, rail decarbonisation continues to contribute positively towards leisure, employment, business and supply chain opportunities.<\/p>\n

“The strategy also draws on the work that Network Rail are delivering towards climate action and sustainability.”<\/p>\n
