{"id":314566,"date":"2025-11-10T22:50:05","date_gmt":"2025-11-10T12:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/railuk.com\/?p=185183"},"modified":"2025-11-10T22:50:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-10T12:50:05","slug":"gtr-and-railway-children-join-forces-to-protect-vulnerable-young-people-in-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=314566","title":{"rendered":"GTR and Railway Children join forces to protect vulnerable young people in London"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/railuk.com\/railway-stations\/gtr-and-railway-children-join-forces-to-protect-vulnerable-young-people-in-london\/\" title=\"GTR and Railway Children join forces to protect vulnerable young people in London\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"485\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/10123521\/GTR-Railway-Children-485x360.jpeg\" class=\"webfeedsFeaturedVisual wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/10123521\/GTR-Railway-Children-485x360.jpeg 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/10123521\/GTR-Railway-Children-80x60.jpeg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Representatives from Railway Children met with Angie Doll, chief executive officer of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) at East Croydon station, to discuss the vital work being carried out to support vulnerable children and young people across London\u2019s rail network and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>This important initiative is being supported by GTR\u2019s &#8216;Your Station, Your Community Improvement Fund&#8217;, which has awarded a grant to strengthen Railway Children&#8217;s training, community engagement and direct intervention programmes along GTR routes.<\/p>\n<p>The funding will enhance the ability of station staff to identify and support vulnerable individuals while fostering stronger partnerships within station communities.<\/p>\n<p>East Croydon is one of the key focus areas for Railway Children alongside Finsbury Park, both of which experience a higher incidence of child safeguarding concerns.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the complex challenges facing young people on the rail network, Jasmine Sykes, London-based Railway Children Youth Practitioner, highlighted the wider issues that often underpin the cases referred to them by British Transport Police:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany young people may first come to our attention due to something like ticket evasion, but that\u2019s often just a symptom of deeper issues at home, at school, or elsewhere in their lives. Railway Children UK is a charity close to my heart and this partnership will help make our stations and trains safer and more compassionate places for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As part of the GTR grant, the Railway Children Youth Ambassador Network launched a mental health awareness campaign designed by young people, for young people. The campaign, which features across digital and print media throughout the station, encourages open conversations about mental health and reaching out for help.<\/p>\n<p>Janet R, a Railway Children Youth Ambassador who contributed to the campaign, shared her experience:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter receiving support from Railway Children myself, I\u2019m proud to now help develop campaigns that can change perceptions and show that young people just need someone to listen. It means a lot to give something back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The partnership aims to strengthen local safeguarding responses across the rail network through targeted training, cross-sector collaboration, and direct engagement with young people in need of support.
