norm.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">These events that led me to being concerned of a potential collapse of the train regional service to Swan Hill if ignored too long.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>26\/10\/25<\/strong> <strong>VN17<\/strong> with loco <em><strong>N458 <\/strong><\/em>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>BZN 252 <\/em><strong><em>Door light external<\/em><\/strong> ex <em>07:40-07:42<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>Bendigo<\/em><\/strong> siding <strong>N460 <\/strong>in it with red flag on the coupler!!!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong> BRN 31<\/strong> AG [auxiliary Generator] is spiking and sounding a little jagged here and there, I wonder if it seems it need to be looked at soon?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When it returned it need to return to workshop to address a few things.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>29\/10\/25<\/strong> <strong>VN14 <\/strong>with loco <strong>N465<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before Kanagroo Flat were heard, rough areas track works in progress on this sections, as flange squeals were heard last week I rode.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Very rough riding on sections after the <strong>detonators<\/strong> a &#8220;<em>safety warning device&#8221; <\/em>was heard from the carriage. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Normally used to <strong>alert the workers <\/strong>further down a train was approaching their section or areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When it returned it need to return to workshop to address few thing with it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1\/11\/25 N458 &amp; VN14<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>somehow seem hear separate cycles in the locomotive whist it&#8217;s idling.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later after the spike fluctuations inside were not so obvious as it was happening very rapidly after starting up the HEP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>08:16 lost light\/power in the train <\/strong> I was peering out the window before occurrence&#8230;.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><em> <\/em><\/em><\/strong><em><em>Somehow I turned my head just in time see <\/em>lights go out in the carriage whist in motion!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>LIGHTS OUT!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Train crew quickly restored light and power in the train at 08:17<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arrived at Bendigo 09:58 and watched the crowd of passenger getting off the service and those standing outside boarding the service. when all of sudden..\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10:00 before departure a &#8220;click&#8221; was heard and the train lost the lights\/power at Bendigo!!!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">I abruptly turned my head <strong>&#8220;lights out!&#8221; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the people who entered the carriage looked surprised paused whist walking past in the carriage <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">As a <em><strong>&#8220;Concerned train traveller&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> I<strong> advised them so they would not get alarmed.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Oh they just will just reset something &amp; restore the light\/power for the train.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It took two attempts for the crew the restore power in the train and we rolled onward from Bendigo shortly after. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>later on I shuffled to the buffet for my cup of coffee and noticed the next carriage was stuffy and still.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>whist in the buffet I notice a brief, rapid electrical spike taking place indicated by fluro tubes of light in the carriage 10:27<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I noticed after getting my refreshments walking back to my carriage the air was blowing in <strong>BN14<\/strong>, but was <em>WARM <\/em>air not <em>COOL<\/em> air<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Arrived Swan Hill 12:32<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The crew was prepping the train and a crowd of the passengers headed for the coach connection to Robinvale and Mildura. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I watched the runaround of the loco<strong> N458 <\/strong>changed ends while there was driver and conductor change at Swan Hill<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A big crowd was forming waiting for boarding call for the 13:35 Southern Cross train from Swan Hill on the platform being the weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">I understand the train had  <strong>HEP aka &#8220;Head End Power<\/strong>&#8221; problems<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">To me it seem to look like electrical connection issues within the locomotive or the train after being bounced badly to point I can hear the internal in the carraige rattling whist rolling on those rough sections V\/Line \/Metro areas day in and day out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">I felt this train is in no state to take the Evening Service, as on a <strong>Saturday<\/strong> Timetable the day service often make up the evening <strong>18:43 <\/strong>Service.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I observe on the return service Air conditioning in <strong>14BN w<\/strong>as now working with <strong>BOTH communication\/ passenger saloon door <\/strong>isolated set by crew on <strong>&#8220;Manual&#8221;<\/strong> setting.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Therefore the passenger was subjected to noisy <strong>riding conditions<\/strong> due to the ends of the carriage were currently doors now in<strong> open position<\/strong> whist train was in motion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But still needs to be looked at to figure out why is was blowing hot air earlier with communication doors on <strong>&#8220;Auto&#8221;<\/strong> setting self opening\/closing  mode<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Was Thermostat set wrong or was it something else?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On arrival at <strong>18:32<\/strong> the train was taken away to yard and workshop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I saw <strong>VN17 r<\/strong>eady for boarding with loco standing at 5A after arriving at 3B<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><em>2\/11\/25 VN14 with loco N467<\/em><\/strong> and <strong>BRN41<\/strong> sounded better not so rough and jagged, most the trip was good air was cooling the train as it should.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>14BN communication door was still isolated in <strong>&#8220;manual&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was warm during day and cooler by dusk the train roll on nicely and air conditioning didn&#8217;t skip a beat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t know it what it was but at on the up leg after going over those rough areas after <em><strong>Gisborne<\/strong><\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">heard a faint crackle just looked in time to see a small <strong><em>bluish arc flash <\/em><\/strong>opposite me from ceiling somewhere in the carriage what it was I don&#8217;t have clue!!!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Coincidentally the light in the carriages had very quick flicker briefly moments later!!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>4-5\/11 Stormy evening, sampling the &#8220;Red Eye Special&#8221; <em>VN17 &amp; N458<\/em> 18:08<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/2025-11-07-10.33.37-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-313326\" style=\"width:432px;height:auto\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>VN10 <\/strong>was in Melbourne yard and <strong>VN14 <\/strong>was returning as we were rolling out of towards the flyover<\/em>..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"> <strong>peak hr has commenced of workers etc. good no. on the service amongst me travelling home or to away for the long weekend I  settled down and had wholesome dinner on the train.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From my window I saw the storm clouds gather with rain on the way to <strong>Castlemaine about 19:43 <\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>forked lightning over seen in the storm clouds striking the  N-NE mountain ranges whist toward sunset shone from the W as the train was rolling Nth at the time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bendigo <\/strong>20:20 and people got off and more got on from Bendigo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>22:20<\/strong> <em>  Rapid Spikes&nbsp; <\/em>took place in fluro tubes in light at far spaced erratic intervals.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Something emerging in the function of time like VN10?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>N458 did she get bounced too hard?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>20:39<\/strong> light brightness in the carriages sort faded briefly  and&nbsp; back to full brightness  at odd intervals.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why is this happening? seems odd and  it seems not normal!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>VN17<\/strong> rolled in Swan Hill 22:55 in the most interesting manner, we were came to rough stop!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All I knew was that someone was tired!!! <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">06:05 at Swan Hill ready for 06:54 service expecting big crowd as it was Melb Cup Day!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>06:06 the was crew prepping their train and loco shortly earlier as arrived and strolled toward the loco for better loco a &#8220;click&#8221; was heard.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The whole train lost it&#8217;s lights is this meant to happen ?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the country you can really hear that circuit breaker or connector activate, it was reset again by crew.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Now in quieter setting in the country station  compared to noisy Southern Cross station it seem <strong>N458<\/strong> was bit unwell\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The frequencies in <strong>N458<\/strong> seem to a spiking is very rapid sort of goes up a bit in frequency and revert back to lower frequency slightly a breaking the rhythm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s a very intriguing sound known to me the electrical of signature of a locomotive and train!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If possible as I would like to be enlighten a bit more what does this means by mentor who are willing to share their expertise in the industry \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As I wonder often what a spark or loco technical person etc. would say about this?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>External door lock <\/strong>issues occurring Water gardens, it seem confirmed there were problems with the train 11:17 Crew went to rectify it!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure Hill Service!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>After watching the Albury and couple VLocity pull in and roll out, I noticed the set for Swan Hill 07:39 was late well after 07:00 <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Crew, catering for buffet were waiting well after <strong>07:00 f<\/strong>or the Swan Hill service to be shunted for them to prep for the service!!!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> At <strong>06:58 VN14<\/strong> was seen first thing in the morning push pull configuration and  loco <strong>N467 <\/strong>was facing me at<strong> 3B<\/strong>  briefly and lead away on the mainline ,empty cars by another N class no. unknown.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>VN10 w<\/strong>as hastily brought in by Y class where loco <strong>N456<\/strong> was coupled and we were boarded as soon the crew finished the safety checks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We lost our path departed <strong>07:55<\/strong> etd and <strong>VN17<\/strong> was seen at <strong>Castlemaine 09:58<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Arrived <strong>Swan Hill 12:53<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Train depart on time 13:35 but suffer external door fault at Kerang delaying the service.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-center is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">14:20<strong> BZN262 <\/strong>got external door fault was reported and was isolated<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>On arrival back <strong>18:28 to Southern Cross<\/strong> a Alstom tech  personnel were waiting to address the train&#8217;s issues I understand that <strong>VN10<\/strong> was booked for the workshop for repairs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Observations:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As the younger VLocity they too getting knocked around too due to the rough riding conditions on some lines\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> as I was asked when are the getting more VLocitys as there is shortage of trains? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I replied<strong> I do not know<\/strong>, but I understand 134 on order via state gov statement\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>but as I understand if true that any payment on the transport rail manufacturer &amp; provider for new rolling stock are outstanding I guess it within their right to <strong>withhold<\/strong> orders until the money comes in!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As that day I saw several VLocity that was lit up ready to go some was taken away without passenger at times people were meant to be on them departing the stations operating as a  service!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I happened to be aware N set at Bendigo Rly Workshop  amongst the withdrawn VN sets  it  included <strong>N12<\/strong> which was recently retired!\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>3 sets<\/strong> left <strong><em>public service :VN10,VN17 and VN14 <\/em><\/strong>with a handful of N classes locos left for use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There currently are two Swan Hill service during the day 4 sets are in action providing the service due to <em>rough riding conditions<\/em> on certain areas both <strong>Metro\/V\/Line <\/strong>from what I am seeing and experiencing on route  it speeding up wear and tear on these trains!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why does it seem they\/top management look like they are determined to withdraw all order classic fleet at the expense of the service in <strong>quality <\/strong>and <strong>ultimately safety<\/strong> for regional train travellers?\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With only <strong>3 sets <\/strong>and handful of loco, when the other <strong>two<\/strong> sets are booked for repairs they only got <strong>ONE <\/strong>train available for use!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Conclusion:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Could  this mess stems the advice given from Rolling Stock and Ticketing of DOT, the person is versed on Metro rolling stock and smaller rail networks in Sth Australia and Western Australia where a <strong>&#8220;One Size Fits All&#8221;<\/strong>? <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The DOT Rolling stock and ticketing who approves the rolling stock CV states:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center the rough riding condition on route speeding up the wear and tear on these trains<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To me it could seen as prudent preparation to accommodate the risk of unforeseen delays to the regular periodic maintenance of tracks via Metro or V\/Line delayed from the planned dates etc. after all the state is broke and heavily in
