{"id":308854,"date":"2025-10-29T20:12:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T10:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=308854"},"modified":"2025-10-29T20:12:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T10:12:08","slug":"hospital-gets-low-carbon-heating-from-data-centres","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=308854","title":{"rendered":"Hospital gets low-carbon heating from data centres"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Buildings in a city will be provided with low-carbon heating from data centres in a new \u00a395m scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milton Keynes University Hospital will be the first place in the city to benefit from the heat network by developers 1Energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It involves taking wasted heat from data centres and from an energy centre located in the north of the city that will be powered by heat pumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeremy Bungey, executive director of 1Energy, said their mission was to de-carbonise heat and the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/1energy.uk\/networks\/milton-keynes-energy-network\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Milton Keynes Energy Network<\/a>&nbsp;was &#8220;a vital step in that journey&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project has received \u00a317.6m in funding from the government&#8217;s Green Heat Network Fund and has secured more than \u00a378m of private capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tony Marsh, director of estates and facilities at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: &#8220;This partnership will allow us to cut carbon emissions significantly while ensuring our heating infrastructure is resilient and future-ready.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-308856\" style=\"width:610px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image.webp 480w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/image-300x169.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Heat will be transported along a 20km network of underground water pipes to provide heating for buildings in Milton Keynes (pictured)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>1Energy said 100 gigawatt hours of energy would be generated through the network each year, equivalent to the heat needed for 20,000 homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will initially heat 74 large buildings by the end of 2027 with longer term ambitions to start heating households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The developer said the Milton Keynes Energy Network would help to cut customers&#8217; reliance on fossil fuels while supporting both the NHS and the city&#8217;s ambitions to reduce net carbon emissions to zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the scheme would cut 15,000 tonnes of emissions a year &#8211; the equivalent of planting 238,000 trees &#8211; because of the 75% reduction in heating emissions for the connected buildings, compared to gas boilers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Bungey said that as well as delivering efficient, low-carbon heating it was &#8220;an example of how we can re-purpose waste heat into community value, powering a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The energy centre that will help to provide heat to the network will be located adjacent to Linford Wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be powered by large air source heat pumps, which extract heat from the air and turn it into useable heating &#8211;
