Construction of the Newcastle Airport international terminal upgrade is progressing, with demolition complete and underground works now underway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Australian Government has committed $55 million for the new international terminal at Newcastle Airport, including border facilities, which will support the aviation industry and tourism jobs and connect the Hunter with the rest of the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

The old terminal has been demolished, a new concrete slab has been poured and columns supporting the new area for border agencies are in.<\/span><\/p>\n

Work is underway on the underground baggage handling tunnels and electrical substation that will allow solar panels to be connected later in the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Visiting the airport on Wednesday 17 January 2024, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said she was delighted to see the progress on the international terminal upgrade.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis upgrade will unlock greater opportunities for local tourism while better connecting residents to the world,\u201d Ms King said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Hunter is the sixth largest economy in the country and the upgrade and expansion of the airfield and terminal will strengthen the region with 850,000 additional visitors and approximately $12.7 billion in economic activity over the next 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

The project is anticipated to create more than 500 construction jobs throughout its life and will deliver over 4,400 permanent, high-quality jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Newcastle Airport CEO, Peter Cock, said, <\/span>“The economic uplift brought about by our new international airport will help future proof the economy of the Hunter. It will support industry, enable trade, help create jobs well beyond the visitor economy and will be a vibrant part of our region, helping in the Hunter transition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The new terminal has been designed by Cox Architects and the design reflects the natural beauty of the Hunter.<\/span><\/p>\n
