margin-bottom: 5px; clear:both;max-width: 100%;\" link_thumbnail=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/07161209\/Drone-still-of-the-purpose-built-worksite-at-Clifton-Penrith-485x360.png 485w, https:\/\/cdn.railuk.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/07161209\/Drone-still-of-the-purpose-built-worksite-at-Clifton-Penrith-80x60.png 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Rail passengers are being given advanced notice of a huge programme of journey improving upgrades on the West Coast Main Line this Christmas and New Year.<\/p>\n<p>Between 24 December and 15 January, hundreds of essential projects will take place to make future journeys more reliable for passengers and freight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all part of an ongoing investment of \u00a3196m by Network Rail into both the northern and southern sections of one of Britain\u2019s busiest rail routes.<\/p>\n<p>The largest projects this Christmas and New Year are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A<strong>\u00a0\u00a326m\u00a0<\/strong>upgrade to a vital railway junction across all four main lines at Hanslope in Northamptonshire between\u00a0<strong>24 December and 5 January*.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A\u00a0<strong>\u00a316m<\/strong>\u00a0investment into Preston station\u2019s signalling system between\u00a0<strong>1 \u2013 5 January 2026**.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A rolling\u00a0<strong>\u00a361m\u00a0<\/strong>programme of signalling upgrades at\u00a0<strong>Kingmoor<\/strong>, north of Carlisle between\u00a0<strong>1 &#8211; 7 January***<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The main phase of a\u00a0<strong>\u00a360m\u00a0<\/strong>railway bridge replacement over the M6 at Penrith in Cumbria between\u00a0<strong>31 December &#8211; 15 January****.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The remaining \u00a333m accounts for numerous more railway renewals to overhead power lines, station platforms, bridges, track and signalling systems along the length of the 309-mile route between London Euston and the Scottish border.<\/p>\n<p>The renewals in December and January are integral to Network Rail\u2019s long-term vision to ensure the West Coast Main Line stays fit for the future.<\/p>\n<p>For the work to safely take place, significant sections of the line will need to be entirely closed to train traffic over a 22-day period between 24 December and 15 January.<\/p>\n<p>Network Rail has been working closely with train operators to try and keep passengers on trains for as much of their journey as possible; Central region Capital Delivery director, said:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cThis Christmas and New Year we\u2019ll be investing tens of millions of pounds as part of our long-term commitment to make the West Coast Main Line fit for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur ambitious programme, with numerous large-scale journey improving projects, will mean certain sections of the route will have to close across 22 days this festive season.
