{"id":29525,"date":"2024-04-22T16:49:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-22T06:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=29525"},"modified":"2024-04-22T15:56:51","modified_gmt":"2024-04-22T05:56:51","slug":"two-stations-being-built-for-the-14bn-metro-tunnel-project-have-been-hit-by-delays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/?p=29525","title":{"rendered":"Two stations being built for the $14bn Metro Tunnel project have been hit by delays"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Construction delays at two stations on the $14bn Metro Tunnel have raised concerns about the project\u2019s timelines and budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Construction delays have hit two of the five new stations being built&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heraldsun.com.au\/news\/victoria\/milestone-reached-in-14bn-metro-tunnel-project\/news-story\/d6278406582ebb595743fb6cb596a0b0\">for the Metro Tunnel<\/a>, putting fresh pressure on project deadlines and its $14bn budget.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Town Hall and State Library station teams are racing the clock to be ready for passengers next year, with crews already working 24 hours a day across a number of sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But workers supposed to be \u201cdemobilising\u201d at the two CBD builds have recently been given contract extensions, with material and workforce shortages blamed for delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Allan government says it is still confident the new line, which will free up capacity across the rail network and reshape CBD travel, will be ready to take passengers next year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It says the two CBD stations were always going to take the longest to build due to being so deep underground, and point to the fact Arden Station in North Melbourne is already built and stations at Parkville and near the Shrine are nearing completion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/image-19.jpeg\" alt=\"The Metre Tunnel has a $14bn budget. Picture: David Crosling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the delays, Minister Colin Brooks on Monday said the Metro Tunnel \u201cwill open\u201d next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve always been complex projects, they\u2019re deep underground in the middle of the CBD,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut that Metro line will open in 2025.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shadow Transport Minister David Southwick on Monday called on the government to release the full cost details for major projects in the upcoming budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time the government comes clean as to how much these major projects are going to cost Victorians,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want hidden costs. We want a line item of how much the SRL is going to cost, Metro, West Gate Tunnel, Level Crossings &#8211; every major project that has blown out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, several industry and project figures said significant problems had emerged at the Town Hall and State Library fit-outs, and it was unclear when they would finish or whether they would meet budgets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said there had also been issues testing rail signalling systems \u2014 effectively the traffic lights and IT that trains use in the tunnel to keep a safe distance from one another \u2014 such as glitches with communication-based train controls and platform overshoots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rail industry insiders say such problems were expected as part of testing, however, and would be addressed before real-time operations start late this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a recent Auditor-General report on major project progress, the tunnel is expected to open between September and December next year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/d20b9602a5f20c16856eab8f5c69622b.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29530\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/d20b9602a5f20c16856eab8f5c69622b.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/d20b9602a5f20c16856eab8f5c69622b-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.vibewire.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/d20b9602a5f20c16856eab8f5c69622b-768x576.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The tunnel is expected to open between September and December.
