A big part of that, 500 billion crowns (45 billion euros), will go to rail infrastructure.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span id=\"more-66309\"><\/span>Under the Transport Administration\u2019s plan, the maintenance backlog in Sweden could be resolved by 2050, \u201cassuming continuous resource contributions and that other railway stakeholders implement their plans\u201d. Importantly, the maintenance schedule allows for trains to continue running while maintenance work is ongoing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe rollout of the ERTMS signaling system for the railway continues and will be introduced gradually until 2042\u201d, the Transport Administration adds. \u201cIn addition, several capacity-increasing measures are proposed for rail and road.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Security<\/h2>\n<p>The Swedish agency highlights the \u201cdeteriorating security situation\u201d as an underlying reason for the investments. \u201cThe transport sector needs to strengthen its ability to maintain essential societal functions, both in peacetime crises and at high alert and, ultimately, in war\u201d, it says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed plan contains important elements that contribute to a more robust transportation system that also strengthens total defense\u201d, said Roberto Maiorana, Director General of the Swedish Transport Administration. Despite the announcement, approval of the plan is still pending.
