Moldova is planning to build a new railway to Romania, which would connect the country to the EU\u2019s rail network. The country is betting that the investment will pay off in the long-term.<\/strong>
\n<\/span>The railway would run from the capital city Chi\u0219in\u0103u to the Romanian border, for a total length of 107 kilometres, reports Romanian publication Club Feroviar.<\/p>\n

“This is about faster and safer travel for passengers, in modern conditions of comfort; stimulating trade and cross-border connectivity, by facilitating the transport of goods to the European Union; integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Union’s core TEN-T network, which will increase economic competitiveness and attractiveness for investment\u201d, the Moldovan infrastructure ministry stated.<\/p>\n

Strategic alignment<\/h2>\n

“The new Chi\u0219in\u0103u-Ungheni line will represent not only a technical innovation for the national railway infrastructure, but also a strategic project that aligns the Republic of Moldova with European transport standards\u201d, the ministry continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough this investment, the country will have a direct and efficient connection with the member states of the European Union, strengthening both the mobility of citizens and long-term economic prospects.\u201d<\/p>\n

For now, a pre-feasibility study is being carried out with help of the EU\u2019s Eastern Partnership Investment Facility for Connectivity (EPIC), Moldovan media say.<\/p>\n
