Information panels with Makaton symbols that promote walks, trails, cycle routes, nature reserves and heritage attractions have come to six Northern<\/a> stations in Cumbria.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people with disabilities to communicate. It is used by over 100,000 children and adults in the UK as their main method of communication or as a way to support speech.<\/p>\n

The panels have been installed at Corkickle, Dalston, Harrington, Seascale, St Bees and Wigton stations.<\/p>\n

The project, which is called \u2018Beyond the Home\u2019, is a collaboration between Northern,\u00a0Community Rail Cumbria,\u00a0West House,\u00a0Carlisle Day Services\u00a0and\u00a0Allerdale & Copeland Day Opportunities.<\/p>\n

Cumberland Council<\/a> and The Makaton Charity<\/a> have also supported the campaign.<\/p>\n

Craig Harrop, regional director for Northern, said: \u201cWe believe that train travel should be easy for everyone \u2013 but it is important that we continue to provide that support once customers step off the train.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy collaborating on projects like \u2018Beyond the Home\u2019, we\u2019re helping to increase active and accessible travel along the Cumbrian Coast Line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warren Birch, Community Rail Partnership<\/a> officer, said: \u201cIt was wonderful working with the different organisations and particularly the people who access the services who are the real stars of the \u2018Beyond the Home\u2019 project.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo see their initial ideas develop into the end products was inspiring, as was the positive change in people\u2019s self-esteem and confidence.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunity Rail Cumbria hope that people will travel by train to visit hidden gem destinations all along the West Cumbrian coast.\u201d<\/p>\n
