This week, broadcaster, journalist, and RailStaff Awards 2025 host Michael Portillo launches his new BBC series 200 Years of the Railways.<\/p>\n

The series, which begins tonight (16 September) at 8pm on BBC Two, follows the route of the pioneering Stockton and Darlington Railway in North East England – the world\u2019s first public railway to carry fee-paying passengers using steam locomotives.<\/p>\n

Michael visits key locations in the story of this pioneering railway, including the town of Shildon, from where the train hauled by Locomotion No.1 set off in 1825; Bishop Auckland, where he joins thousands at a spectacular outdoor show to launch the 200th anniversary and drives a replica of the original train; and the Tyne and Wear Metro, where he discovers a new fleet transforming travel in north east England.<\/p>\n

The opening episode, features Hitachi\u2019s Newton Aycliffe factory, where the UK\u2019s first battery-powered intercity trains are under construction.<\/p>\n

On 27 November, the former politician will guide guests through celebrations at the RailStaff Awards 2025. Known for his warmth, wit, and unmistakable style, Michael brings a wealth of experience from the highest echelons of government and the media world.<\/p>\n
